Seems to have older down and out clients i did not enjoy my stay had upper bunk with man who snoored and turned all night
Very pleased with our stay at Hilo Bay Hostel. People were good to deal with, and you go in knowing that you will be sharing a floor bath facility. It is very much like hotels were in the late 1800s.

Nice friendly informative staff ok location good wifi
I like the building, you could feel the history. Please fix that front gate, anybody could come in off the street
the bunk beds are daunting. I would like to contact john quinones so he could stage an episode of 'what would you do', about the dangerous bunk bed ladders. I think a parent telling a child to climb up and down from the top bunk could qualify as child abuse. the question is what would the roommates or the staff do in response. don't settle for a top bunk here until there is a real ladder for it. there should be a gap where you can slide your body over the edge and blindly find a rung.
Hire friendly staff, put blinds on windows to keep street lights out, update bunk beds so you can actually get on top safely, get rid of the common area rule in kitchen about closing at 9:45 pm, and have a few more amenities like holding bags for free not 5 dollars a bag etc.
Great location and a beautiful building. The staff was helpful, polite, and the general vibe was good. This is a traditional travel hostel at its best and worth the stay!
Nice hostel and friendly staff. Very cosy and friendly atmosphere close to amenities. Would stay here again
It's agrand old building and given there's really only two hostels in Hilo, it's no doubt the best there is. It's a very quiet place - no drinking or noise after 10pm and dorms are segregated. They also accommodate school groups. That said, the staff were very friendly and helpful and if you're coming to Hilo to party you've come to the wrong place. Hawai'i is about nature. Nonetheless, the tavern and kava bar down the road are good fun after a day's hiking or hanging on the beach.
It's a retirement house. Old man are watching movies all evenings and there is no place to hang out.
