Very good location along from the main square. Lovely guy runs it and the staff are really helpful. Breakfast is better than in a lot of places, with the usual cereals and toast but in addition a "treat" - one morning a pancake and one morning a fruit salad. Plus they make their own bread which is yummy. The shower in the dorm is really good.

Thanks for your lovely word! Especially toward the end of a long season (200+ days non-stop!), it's really nice to read that people appreciate that we try hard to go the extra mile for you! Thank you! --Sebastian

Thanks for your great review! In this case, "American" stands for Chilean - just to avoid confusions... ;-) Thanks for staying with us! --Sebastian

A very cozy place with extremely friendly and helpful staff who will give you great hints regarding restaurants, etc. and can organise all the day trips to the penguins, etc. The included breakfast is good and the WiFi quite fast. Only downside is that it can get really cold during night times (heaters are not in the rooms, but in the corridors).

Thanks for your awesome review! You're right, so far, we only got Southern Patagonian style natural gas heating in the house. If you ask me: beats wood-stove heating as in may other parts of Southern Chile, especially in the mornings... Anyways, we're currently studying the option of investing in central heating (bloody expensive that is!) - unfortunately this may be too late for you - unless you come back one day... ;-) Looking forward to that! Best, Sebastian

I had a lovely time at Hospedaje Magallanes. I loved how small and home-like it felt; everyone that stayed there seemed to be on the same page and therefore I had no doubts in leaving my things out during the day while I was off doing other things. The breakfast was great...homemade bread...cereal...yogourt...and always a "surprise" (eggs/crepe/fruit salad/flan) brought out by the cook :) Sebastian and Marisol are super friendly and their current intern, Stef, was awesome too!

More a stopping location on the way through to do the W trek in Torres del Paine, great for the night stop as has everything a traveller could ask for minus the party atmosphere so a good warm night sleep here.

Sebastian proved to be an organising wizard. The tour to the new king penguin colony I wanted to take the next wasn't available and the ferry wasn't operating either. In no time, he managed to get me a car, map, all the information of how to get there, an additional tour the following morning and my transport to Puerto Natales. All this while having a chat and dealing with other guests at the hostel. He also recommended a new local restaurant, which turned out to serve great food. Brilliant!

Very laid back, friendly and accommodating hosts make this a relaxed and comfortable home from home. Comfy beds, small kitchen, good showers and a great breakfast make it good value. Some lockers in the dorm and a nice big mirror in the bathroom for the girls would make it almsot perfect :) Good location too, very close to the bus stop and supermarket. Would definitely stay here again.

A fantastic hostel built on to the back of a house about five minutes walk from the town square. Marisol is really lovely and so very helpful. The place is spotless and the shower seems to be quite new. There are no lockers in the room, but everyone was really friendly when I was there, so it wasn't a problem. Breakfast was prepared for me in the morning before I left for the airport at 5.30am! I will definitely stay here again.

Thanks for your awesome review! Yup, the shower cabin is brand new! True! There are still no lockers in the dorm - answering all the questions of curious travelers tends to be time consuming and we still haven't found the time to finish the lockers for this reason - but it's work in progress and we're almost done! We serve breakfast from 07:00 through 10:30-ish. For early risers, we always leave breakfast out - self service - no problem! Thanks for staying with us and looking forward to having you here again one day! Kind regards, Sebastian

the woman running the place was very friendly but one thing I found odd was that on arrival she told me that the tour to see the penguins the next day was full. I was surprised at this and asked if ALL tours were full and she said yes. It turned out that there was space with other companies, just not the one that they book with - but by that point I'd booked my bus to Puerto Natales and so could not go. Big shame as that's the main thing to do in Punta Arenas and very poor service on her part!

Owner Comment (Show)
Thanks for your comment! Nevertheless, I find it quite odd and would like to comment on it: According to our registry, you filled in, you arrived at 9:00 p.m. That tours might be booked out in Patagonia in high season for the next day, to me, seems to be common traveler's knowledge. Sorry, if you didn't know that! As far as we know, there is only one company that goes to the penguins in the morning - every day at 07:00 a.m. Marisol probably called them to check availability (because that's what we do - always!), but if they're full, what can we do? On Feb. 14, the ferry to Isla Magdalena left at 5:00 p.m. and returns to Punta Arenas at about 9:30 - 10:00 p.m. - too late to travel to Puerto Natales on this day, since the last bus leaves at 8:00 p.m. We always offer all available options, we know of, in a fair way, for our guests to chose from and even tell everybody that we can only offer what's available, but everybody has to decide for himself, what their best choice might be (considering budget, time frame etc.). We have no interest whatsoever, to hold back any tour option, especially because we don't operate any tours on our own at his point. Sorry to say, but what you are describing doesn't sound like what we usually do at all - and have been doing for over a decade! If you found another tour, which we weren't aware of, why didn't you approach Marisol again, shared you knowledge or simply booked the tour? You left Punta Arenas on the 2:30 p.m. bus to Puerto Natales. At 3:00 p.m. tours depart towards the penguin colony at Seno Otway. There is always enough space on these tours, because if one minibus is full another one simply will be chartered. This tour returns to Punta Arenas by 7:00 p.m., which allows for enough time to catch the 8:00 p.m. bus to Puerto Natales. On top of this, the only bus company leaving to Puerto Natales at 2:30 p.m. is Buses Fernández. We sell their tickets. Until 1 hours prior to departure, we could have changed your ticket - even over the phone, which is common practice and we do that all the time. After all, the 250km, 3-hour bus ticket with Buses Fernández costs CLP 5,000 (about USD 10.-). I know how it is to travel on a budget, because I've done that quite extensively. Worse case scenario, was there really no way to let that go of that bus ticket and buy a new one? Sorry to say, but this seams like an awkward set of circumstances. If we made a mistake, I apologize for that, but -to be honest- I would have expected a bit more self-reliance. Kind regards, Sebastian

Really friendly staff, very helpful and fun to talk to. They are interested in their guests and chat with them as well. The breakfast is really nice with homemade German bread. Good advice and help for further planning. Were there more than once. German is definitely the preferred language of the guests - lots of german travellers there. We liked it a lot.

Owner Comment (Show)
Thanks for your great review! ... yeah, I know, I moved to the End of the World to escape from all the Germans in Germany and they keep on following me!!! ... BUT we have some Austrian and Swiss-German guests, too - every once in a while... ;-) Alright, just in case (non-German speaking) travelers get frighten by the comments above, then please note that we can still clearly say that we have an international crowd staying with us. So, common over and share your language, culture and favorite meal with us! --Sebastian

Fantastic accommodation, Sebastion and Marisol were extremely helpful with bookings etc, can get your bus ticket and book penguin tours etc right at the hostal. Spotlessly clean. Their family home is right next door and their two young sons and small dogs are in and out, I felt very much at home there, all are welcoming.

Hospedaje Magallanes was the most home-like comfortable and friendly hostel I have ever stayed in. It really felt like you were a guest and the hostel owners, people who work there, and other travelers were like a temporary family. It is naturally quiet, warm, and the breakfasts are delicious. They have REAL brewed coffee - a luxury! They also have their own travel company, so you can book expeditions right from the hostel, and they are very knowledgeable and give good advice.

Thank you for your wonderful comment! That's exactly what keeps us rollin'... ;-) One remark: for now, we don't operate any tours of our own anymore, because we prefer to concentrate on our B&B and also to have more time for our kids. Nevertheless, we can still gain from over 10 years of experience of each one of us in the travel business in Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego, which is the foundation of our first-hand, in-depth knowledge of the area. We're happy to share this experience with our guests whenever we can. Best, Sebastian
