Thoroughly enjoyed my stay at Hostal Al Yaras for 3 nights set with the stunning backdrop of the Valle del Elqui. Richard (host) was very laid back along with Fanny who was volunteering. There was a slight mix-up with the booking however they were very accommodating in making me feel comfortable. Breakfast was great with homemade jam too. The Copa America was on at the time and although there was no TV it was no prolem watching on the computer which was appreciated. Great trekking nearby too!
Thanks so much Richard!! I had a great time and if I'm ever back in the area I will be visiting again!

Great place to experience the Elqui Valley. A relaxing spot to take in the valley, and to appreciate the clear, star-filled night skies. Richard is an excellent host, and makes some tasty jams from the locally-grown fruit, which you can try at breakfast. Easy to take the bus anywhere you want to explore the other communities of the valley. Definitely recommend Al Yaras on any visit to the Elqui Valley.
I booked to stay for two nights, and four nights later im still here. This is the perfect place to stay while exploring valle de elqui. Its suuuper easy to get here from la serena, you can get around the valley easily by bus, its clean and comfortable and friendly and safe. Breakfast is great, the surroundings are stunning. OH and the riveeeeer! Its a real quick walk and it is heaven. Um basically, dont do the 'la serena hostel+elqui valley day tour' combo, stay here and explore for days on end.
The owner and stuff will make you feel at home from the moment you enter the gate. They are very lovely and nice people and the place itself is very quiet and at cosy. Make sure to taste all the jams Richard gives you for breakfast they are delicious! He's very interesting man, he'll tell you about the Elqui Valley, the stuff you can do around and he'll try to do everything to help you with any need you may have.
Staff are friendly and the hostel has good facilities. However, due to the location and lack of people, the hostel lacks some atmosphere. Also staying at this hostel was like staying at someone's house which was awkward at times.
Lovely, quiet spot. Easier to find by bus than expected: in La Serena, look for buses with "Paihuano" in the window
