Come to Hostal Al Yaras if you want to live like a local. Richard is an extremely accommodating host, and if you're willing to listen, he can tell you some interesting stories about his experiences. The food is very good as well, and you can eat breakfast/lunch/dinner there if you'd like (I did). Breakfast is free and lunch/dinner cost a very reasonable price. Make sure to try all the amazing jams as well!
Our welcome couldn't have been better, with a cup of coffee and a nice relaxing chat with the owner. The atmosphere was excellent with a beautiful view to the mountains and the hostel itself was like some wonderful holiday garden. They even had a jacuzzi, even though slightly expensive to use it. I had the best breakfast I've gotten in a hostel, home- made food. The location is a bit difficult, not possible to go places walking. Don't use the "taxi service" they offer, it's really over-priced.
Probably the most relaxing stay I´ve had in South America. Although it is a bit away from the cities, this is the place to go if you want a few days to relax after all the traveling you´ve done. This hostel has a well shaded garden to relax and even a rooftop patio to look at the stars at night. Highly recommend this place if you want to relax and see around the rest of the Elqui Valley. Only 8km to Vicuna and an hour away from Pisco Elqui. Very easy to catch a bus to both and back.
We had a great stay at Hostal Al Yaras. The owner and staff are very friendly, helpful and speak english. The owner makes a variety of tasty jams and yoghurt which you get to try. Easy to get there by bus, but would recommend to bring some food and drinks. There are only a few small shops in walking distance. Cooking facilities are available. Easy to take a bus to nearby Vicuna but it costs 800 pesos per person each way. There is also a nice micro brewery in walking distance.
