We saw that this hostel was rated one of the highest in Madrid, and while we have absolutely no complaints about it, we thought it was just a very normal hostel. It is in a more expensive part of town, so we would travel to the La Latina area when we wanted to go out. It was on the third level of a normal apartment building, so everyone else there were permanent residents. Nice rooms with shared bathroom, but no common bar in the bottom for travelers to meet.

We booked Hostal Castilla based on good reviews and a very good price for a double room. The owner was extremely nice and made us feel very welcome. She let us check in early and washed and folded our large bag of laundry for €5. The location was good, close to some very nice places to eat, a supermarket, and only a short walk to Gran Via. The hostal had very good bathroom facilities and a small kitchen with tea/coffee, fridge and microwave. There was also free wifi. An excellent place to stay.

Not fancy of course, but a great spot for the money. No elevator, so you must haul your bags up, but if you are strong enough to do so, there´s no problem. Rocio, the lady in charge, is super-nice and helpful!! ( I don´t know if she speaks any English or other languages, but if you can manage in Spanish you´re all set.) The Hostal is in a great location in Madrid, in a pleasant neighborhood full of cafes and bars and anything you might need. It is right near a really nice plaza, etc.

I really enjoyed my stay at Hostal Castilla! The staff was very friendly and helped me with questions that I had about various places in Madrid. My room was cleaned thoroughly every day and the place was quiet at night.
