This is a really nice hostel with a lot of character. Its great if you want somewhere quiet and relaxing. It has a really nice free breakfast, as well as bread, you get fresh juice and the choice of scrambled eggs or cereal with yoghurt. The facilities are great as well, there is a room with exercise equipment and a TV rooms. It is owned by a Peruvian couple, who are very nice, so its nice to support a local business rather than a foreign owned place for a change.

They do not have the facilities they describe on hostelworld. May be because of the works in progress, but in this case the hostel should be closed or they should alert the guests about the situation.

Staff was very friendly and spoke English, and there was hot water! (you might have to wait a while but it's there!) Very close to the main plaza.

Very professional and more of a hotel for your hostel dollar.

Loved Hostel Sol de Oro . Very central to Plaza Mayor...Only 3 blocks walking . Staff very friendly and helpful . On our last day ,the lady at reception went out in the pouring rain to get a taxi to take us to the bus station . Only downside was that there was no kitchen as they are building a new one . Both computers worked really well especially the Skype (with web-cam) Would definitely stay here if I come back to Arequipa . Gracias Hostal S D Oro

Sol de Oro is under construction and this could have led to the problems we encountered. The facilities are NOT AS ADVERTISED. The kitchen is tiny and cluttered by their construction equipment. There is no "bar" or pool table. The common areas, in general, are not comfortable. The staff was rarely in reception. Every time we needed something we had to go searching through their construction site. Other than that, the rooms were pretty clean and comfortable. Does not deserve its high rating.

Average hostel. Location is great. Plaza de Armas is within walking distance. Sometimes I felt as if I was an inconvienence to the staff when I needed to ask for help. Overall the hostel is fairly clean and everything you would need.

I think the breakfast must have changed- sure, it's good (all the regular bread and tea plus your choice of eggs OR cereal and yogurt), but not worth raving about. What does make this hostel amazing is the helpfulness of the staff- their service is excellent. I wanted to check out the canyon but didn't know exactly how to go about it, and they arranged everything for me. They also got my bus ticket out of Arequipa, and didn't charge service fees for any of it.

We stayed in a private room. Very happy with the location and cleanliness. Staff were excellent and allowed us to check-in early after a long bus ride from Cusco, as well as an early breakfast on check out day. The only negative things to say would be that the private room did not have a window, but was otherwise good; and the puppy playing in the hostel might have fleas - since my wife had several insect bites on the day of our check out. Not really the fault of the hostel. Would stay again.

Really good breakfast and fast internet. However, movies in tv room were only in Spanish and there was only one toilet and shower for our dorm room, this was located in the communal area which meant I often had to quue to use the toilet because everyone semed to use this toilet when in the communal area and I would need to wait to use the toilet if someone was in the shower. Beds were comfortable and staff were helpful.

The hostel itself is very cute and in a wonderful location. The staff was nice, however, I was very upset to discover that we had been overcharged 45 Soles each for the two tours we booked through their in-house tour agency. Other people staying at other hotels/hostels paid much less for the same exact services, and when contacted about this issue, it was never addressed. Too bad, because it left a very poor taste after an otherwise great stay at the hostel. Do your research before booking!

Very nice and super clean hostel right next to the center. Breackfast is one of the best I had in a hostel. Only negative point is that the hostel offers you to book tours or buses for you but then adds 10 soles without telling you about that fee. If you then ask them about it, they give you the 10 soles back, but still not the nicest move..Would however definitely recommend it, especially if you are looking for a very clean hostal

During my stay at this hostel, my friend and I were mugged at knife point based on some misinformation from an information counter in the Plaza and I would not go back to Peru ever again if not for this hostel. The staff was amazing, empathetic and helpful in my time of need. John especially went above and beyond to try to help us. I highly recommend this hostel. If you go to Peru for only two reasons, make Machu Picchu one of them and this hostel the other. This really felt like my home!

Stayed 2 nights, then took their 2 day/1 night Colca Canyon tour and returned for a 3rd night. Good location only 3 blocks from Plaza de Armas, comfortable bunks, nice terrace and garden and decent showers. Water took a while to run hot but it did eventually. Staff were really helpful. Good wifi on the terrace and in my dorm room. Happy to recommend this hostel.

Great place to stay in AQP. Top breakfast, fast laundry (they even stitch your socks together so that they don't lose one in the wash), very comfortable. Walking distance to centre. Pay in US$. For some reason, they offer a very poor s/. exchange rate, even though it's their local currency. Good value in US$.

Hostel was a great place in an awesome location with really clean rooms. Breakfast was wonderful, and was served to you by one of the employees of the hostel. Very relaxed vibe. Not a party hostel. A good place to recharge your batteries.

My favorite of all the hostels we stayed in while in Peru. The room was good-sized, the water was hot and the internet was fast. Good breakfast with the option of eggs or cereal and the staff was enormously helpful in booking tickets to the Colca Canyon and bus tickets to other locations and the view of sunset from the patio is not one to forget. I would stay here again in a heartbeat.

Great location three blocks from main square & in a safe area. Breakfast on the terrace is lovely & w freshly squeezed orange juice & eggs! They have a nice grassy downstairs area though we didn't use this. Staff/manager very helpful with bookings (tours, buses, taxis) Stayed in twin private room which came w towels. Only suggestion is that they should still empty the bins in the private rooms daily
