To go on holidays to Reggio Emilia is a way to discover new artistic treasures. The youth hostel is situated in the historic centre, close to the great Basilica della Madonna della Ghiara (a stupendous early 17th century momument in which houses works by the best Bolognese and Emilian artists of the age), the Sala del Tricolore where, after the Unification of Italy, the national flagwas baptised. Do not miss the 19th century City Theatre, today named for Reggio born Romolo Valli. On the great Piazza stands the ancient monastery of San Francesco which today houses the City Museums, a kind of 'museum of museums' inasmuch as here you can follow, in the original extremely significant steps in scientific collecting.
In the city take place very interesting events such as the European Photography week in April, Reggio Parma Festival in May, Original Sound Track in July, but the most important annual event is on January, 7th: Festa del Tricolore (in 1797 Italians in search of an identity gave birth to the flag which still today flies over Italy from the Alps to Sicily). Furthermore the city is very close to two beautiful art cities: Parma (30 km) and Modena (25 km) are worth to visit.
Established in 2000 the hostel is equipped with all modern services and comfortable lounges and meeting rooms. The hostel is open all year round and proposes 100 beds.
The Hostel basilica della Ghiara belongs is part of the Hostelling International association of hostels in Italy. Please note, if you are not a member of Hostelling International there is an extra charge of 3 euros per person per night. Once you have stayed 6 nights at a HI hostel you become a HI member, and no extra charges apply for future stays.
