Property Description

If you’re tired of generic hostels, commercial routines, if you’re looking for a place with sublime atmosphere and good vibes, then Mali Mrak may be the place you’re looking for. Run by us, a couple of friends from Zagreb, Mali Mrak is considered to be a unique experience by the backpacking community (check the reviews to get an idea), that has grown through 10 years of hosting travellers into an organic, cosy and warm space with natural and personal touches from many that have stayed here.
***Note For May 14th - 17th : A travelling magician has offered to stay in exchange for lodgings & food, so we'll have a show or two during that period ! ***
You’ll easily recognise that we're not fans of commercial routines and that reflects strongly in our culture of hosting – we consider travelling an exchange that is more than getting guests drunk on pub crawls, we rather prefer to get to know you in our green summer garden, with good music, Turkish coffee, homemade wine or just cooking together in the outdoors kitchen. It’s a beautiful spot for spending time together with fellow humans when you’re not exploring the capital. As for the house, it’s full of details, everything has been crafted by hand with lovely clean dorms that are constantly upgraded and decorated. We’ve also hosted and supported travelling artists since ever, so if you think there’s something you can contribute, read more below on that

You’ll get good recommendations to see the usual sights in the centre, but we can also take you on hikes to the local mountain, do bike trips to show you what Zagreb really looks like, free yoga sessions in summer (make sure you ask on time!), communal dinners, things like that, you get the idea - just a bit more ;) On certain evenings you can join Filip if he’s in the mood to visit some of the cool jazz bars in town with live gigs and cool atmosphere.
As for us, we handle things in an honest and spontaneous way, the sense of community has high value here and as long as you respect the house and the people in and around it, you’re considered part of the fold and you’ll have all our knowledge, resources and experience at your disposal. Common sense and efficient solutions are cool and if you appreciate such things then you’re welcome to join us.

If you're visiting in late summer/early autumn an abundance of grapes is available, you're free to pick them as you sit, as they literally grow over our heads. The neighbourhood is surrounded by everything you need, shops, pharmacies and so on. If you're vegan/vegetarian, you won't have a hard time finding what you need. We keep an endless supply of nice, Turkish coffee and good local wine, crowd funded by your laundry – the money is used to keep the supply steady.
If you wish recommendations and suggestions for travelling, you’re in capable hands. We've improved and optimised many people’s vacations in Croatia and the Balkans, with tips on what to avoid, where to go, tailored to your specific interests, needs and resources, so make good use of that!
And if humans are not your preferred choice of company, fret not, we have two lovely dogs (Žužu and Fenris), Peter the hedgehog (or his descendants, it’s kinda hard to distinguish between them), two doves that spend every spring in our plum tree and Carmen the plant. There are many other common areas in the house beside the garden, so our more introverted guests can always find secluded spots if they wish for some private time. Check the pictures to get an idea.

Additional things to do, trivia and stuff:

Left handed people get a discount (yes, it’s not a joke, as many have discovered). Ambience plays a huge role here (a collection of 50 lamps grace the house). Since we support artists, don’t be surprised if you stumble upon the occasional concert, a jazz school of singers or a poetry evening. The longest stay at the house was 3 years, the shortest 5 minutes. You can rent bikes, and if you’re staying longer (3+ days) they’re free.

More specifics:
1. There is no age limit here. Our oldest guest was a great 80 year old backpacking lady from Japan. The house is open to all good travellers.
3. Wi-Fi is sexy fast, 24/7
4. We can arrange shuttle transports for you, more info on the directions page.

LOCATION: Read the directions here on Hostelworld on how to find us, they’re easy and precise. We are not central if that's a thing for you! Our location is good if you prefer to stay outside the tourist zone and yet have quick access to the city centre - we're located in an ordinary, safe neighbourhood where kids play in the streets. Zagreb has an excellent, 24/7 public transportation system that connects you directly from the hostel to everywhere else, you’ll need 10-15 min by tram to the centre. Make sure you buy the cheaper tram tickets (4 kn or 0.5€). Closest hiking spot is 15 minutes from the hostel on foot, but Zagreb has many other locations as well, the city is cool for hiking.
For those who are traveling on a budget and have certain skills- if you can and feel like it, feel free to contribute / upgrade the house in a specific way - we love that (you’ll notice a ton of stuff people have done here) - create something and in return you can get a discount, free food and/or stay. You certainly wouldn't be the first, and we are known to support travellers in many more ways than just giving convenient bed prices. Contact us via email for details on that.
The City Tax (7kn per person per night or cca. 1€) is not included in the room price you book online. We have to charge it in any case, and since many wonder what that is, here goes: it's not something any hostel makes up, it's just that - a city tax that goes to the state of Croatia, a way to make money. We must charge it, and keep it separately because of account keeping, so we rather choose not to incorporate it into the bed price (that means: raising that same price for said amount and proclaim 'no additional tax') and charge it separately and show it on your bill.
CARDS are accepted, but the 3% bank fee is paid by you, not the hostel!

That's all, folks, see you in Zagreb!

Latest Review

" This hostel has such a warm and chill out atmosphere. It is a little further from the city centre as it is more of a residential area, but this means that it is super quiet at night so you can sleep really well! And it is still extremely easy to get to and from the centre. Most of the walls are covered in art murals which definitely makes it the most beautiful hostel I've ever stayed in and really adds to the character of the place. Only downside is that not all beds have power plugs. "
