We stayed in Pangea for two nights. This hostel is more of a party hostel where you´ll have fun in a big group of friends. Be careful of their meal prices though and do not pay in US dollars. We were ripped off for a meal as we were given an exchange rate of $US 1:300 Colones which is rediculious ( money changers will give you $1: 500)! Apply this rate to drinks purchases for a big night out.... and its was crazy. Our room was clean however it smelt quite bad.

The exchange rate is $1=500colones that is clearly marked on the menu , you were in a dorm and we cannot control the smell of your roommates , Maybe a calculator for your next trip would be handy !

It was a great place to stay. Lot´s of character, helpful and informed staff, and decent dorms. I would stay here again.

Very noisy hostel. Rooms pretty small. For 1 night ok, don´t stay longer..

After staying in hostels around the world, this is the WORST I have stayed in. The facilities are good, but it ends there. Poor location in an unsafe part of town, extremely overpriced, and the worst staff I have ever encountered in a hostel. The staff were rude, unhelpful, lied about pricing, and were focused on ripping you off for as much money as possible. The tour desk is also non-existent - the staff did not have a clue about the tours. Avoid this hostel!

The staff was not very helpful. Their only motive is the bottom-line, not the thrill and love of traveling.

Staying at Pangea Hostel Vs. Sleeping on the streets of San Jose Access to natural light: Pangea 0 : Streets 1 (no windows in rooms) Book keeping: Pangea 0 : Streets 1 (did not have a record of our hostelworld booking, although my credit card was charged) Provision of bed linen: Pangea 0 : Streets 1 (one blanket provided no top sheet, plenty of used cardboard boxes available on streets) Overall an alright hostel, probably passed its glory years.

I guess the fact we didn't let you bring a stranger from the street at night into your room pissed you off , but again we are not going to put in danger the safety of other guests , staff and the hostel just because you didn't want to follow the main house rules.

The facility was very nice, cleanliness great, security sound, staff courteous and bilingual. However; the prices were a bit ridiculous on food and drinks as well as a poor exchange rate. There were also many sections, such as the dance floor and movie room which are advertised but were unavailable to us because we were travelling during the "off-season". I would recommend to a friend informing them of a few things.

The reseption staff was kind of unfriendly and unpersonal and treating you like a little baby (I found one of the guys working there very helpful, but he was just there for one night). Then it was the bartender that tought the hostel was suppose to be the loudest reggie bar in San Jose, with three persons trying to chat but he made it impossible, and he even refused to tune the music down. The food was overpriced, just head to t he supermarket which is two blocks away to get breakfast for less

There wasn't a whole lot of people. For advertising as a party hostel and looking like one the atmosphere was not great. They e-mailed me saying if I liked their Facebook page I would get a free drink and then refused to give me one which was odd.

Loved my stay there from september 7-23 2011. Staff is very helpfull and I stayed in doorm rooms, single rooms, and the master suite.. Everything is nice and clean but don't stay in the master suite if you want to sleep. I didn't want to sleep so I loved it. Pura vida. The food is great but the drinks can get exspensive. There is also no place to cook but you can eat your own food on the deck or by the pool. They never did open the Theater the whole time I was there. I'm going back !

Not so much fun here. The staff isn´t very welcoming, barely answering questions. The reserved shuttle from the airport never arrived so i had to take a taxi. The claimed it was because of traffic, but in my way on the taxi, you could see that the traffic is very legit and not at all heavy. One good thing if you go there is the burger, although its overpriced

You didn't have to take a taxi since we coordinated and sent you one ahead of time, traffic was on the way to the airport and not from the airport yotherefore you were not able to see it . Yes you are right, our burger is good , is so good that is known as the tastiest burger in San Jose by lonely planet obviously with thoose high marks it couldn't be the $0.25 cents burger from Mcdonalds .

A very impressive place, especially for the price. Friendly staff, very helpful and accomodating. We made several visits to Pablo at the tour desk who helped us arrange and purchase our trips without charge and with a smile. Overall a great place to stay in san jose, just a little far from some tourist destinations, 30mins from the airport too ( but they provide a reasonably priced airport shuttle). Also, when we took a 2 day/ 1 night excursion to the caribbean coast they stored our bags for us
