We stayed in a private room both at the beginning then end of our trip. The first night we stayed in the presidential suite which faced out the back and was beside the bar making it noisy as the ventilation from the bathroom or the ceiling somehow connected out there. On the way back we stayed in the Grand Suite at the front of the hostel. It wreaked of sewage gases. Upon inspection under the bathroom sink the was no p trap (the curves that are normally in a drain pipe to prevent the smell.

The your desk guy, Diego, was absolutely fantastic. The hostel is good value for money.

Great hostel! It was clean and tidy, the swimming pool was nice and the restaurant was good. Cons: no blankets on the beds, even though it was cold at night.

Great atmosphere in this hostel! Facilities are very clean and comfortable. Negative for me: no kitchen for you to use, and you cant bring any food of your own to the tables at the bar

All lot of the facilities displayed on the Homepage were closed. The food in the hostel was very expensive and there is no way to bring your own.Part of the staff was unfriendly.

I was very happy with my first night's stay at Pangea. I made a reservation to return when I passed through San Jose on my way home. 2 days prior to my reservation I changed my plans and emailed to cancel my reservation. When I read the cancellation policy I saw that there was a 24 hour cancellation policy listed in the bullet points of my confirmation. I asked the hotel to confirm it had received my cancellation. Late the following afternoon I received an emailed saying that I would be charged.

The food and coffee was some of the best I had in Costa Rican hostels. I'd go back just for the coffee! The private room while clean was also very small and the walls let all the sound through. Not necessarily a good thing in a loud and busy place. The mattress wasn't comfy. Felt springs. The bar, terrace and pool areas were great. The computers in the Internet area had horrible keyboards and mice and not all of them worked. Showers were very clean and the hot water was plentiful at all times.

The staff was unfriendly. The atmosphere wasn't the one of a hostel. We brought our food, and were sent to eat it by the pool on the floor like DOGS. We understand that we can not eat it in the "restaurant" (which food was really bad, expect from the burger that was very tasty) but there should be a place with tables for people that can't afford to eat every meal in the restaurant. This place shouldn't be called a hostel. Furthermore, the driver that took us the airport smelled ALCOHOL.

Great security !! Basic private room was good, particularly if you need that extra space to get your self organised for flying home after a big trip

Only thing going for this place is the airport shuttle. Very convenient after a long flight, or when leaving early. Efficient, and good value at about 13 or 15 dollars. But all-male staff are macho and not very friendly, you cant eat or drink your own food- they will tell you not to, and dorms small and cramped with 8 beds in each. Good location though, and in fairness, the staff will help you sort out buses etc. without a smile. Good for the first night and the last night of your trip

This hostel was trying too hard to be cool. The bar/restaurant began playing loud music at 7:00am, which is not cool. The staff were not particularly helpful. Computers and wi-fi did not work. The restroom facilities were arranged very inconveniently. I feel bad for the men who had to do their business in urinals that were exposed to everyone in the hallway. Although the location was close the downtown square and public transit stops, the surroundings were not very safe. food service was slow.

Being able to use credit card for payments of accommodation and/or bar food would help. Walking around San Jose alone at night to get cash out so that I might eat is not ideal... so I just didn't eat. I would have happily spent a bit of money on dinner and drinks had I been able to use my card. I would also like to see lockers placed in the rooms, not outside of them. I didn't feel secure leaving my belongings outside my room. Airport shuttle service was good.

The Hostel is great. The only problem is the noise. I had a room next to the reception and even during the nights it was loud with talks and music.

Good place to stay and base for exploring Costa Rica. I've stayed here twice. The downside is the pricy restaurant and there is no common kitchen. The Upside is friendly and helpfull staff and handy location in San Jose.

It's an average hostel, with average facilities and with to many rules. They sell themselves as a party hostel but at 2 a.m. they were closing the bar and sending everyone to sleep, even if there was no party at all. Is good for a quick stay, but no more then 2 days.

In this hostel you feel like in jail due to safety measures. The reception desk was always understaffed. Due to own bar and restaurant facilities you were not allowed to bring or drink or eat own food ad drinks.

Very well managed and a great atmosphere in the common areas. I would stay here every time I came to San Jose.
