The layout is super cool and the view was amazing! Loved eating breakfast on a hammock on the roof!

Great place to stay en route to airport. Free airport shuttle, great friendly staff, free coffee in the morning (maybe breakfast too but we left early), and very very clean facilities.

- no use of kitchen - no own food in the eating and garden area - not even s.th. to hang on in the rooms --> More a Hotel than a Hostel

Overall it was what I expected from a hostel in San Jose. It is not in the most ideal location, BUT they do a great job making sure everyone is safe at night. Most staff members were pretty friendly, but one stands above the rest. Diego (works at the tour desk) is awesome. He is very friendly and helpful. He helped us take care of all our travel around costa rica and help us book several tours. When we lost some items while on a tour and he made sure we were able to get the items back!

I ordered breakfast at the restaurant 1 hour before my bus was scheduled to depart. 45 minutes later, it still hadn't arrived. They said they would bring it in a to-go box in 5 minutes. 20 minutes after that, I had to run to the bus as I was already 5 minutes late, with no breakfast, no refund. On another night, I tried to cancel a reservation ~55 hours before check-in. The hostel policy is 48 hours. They still took my money, with a staff member admitting that they were not following policy.

We had a bad feeling because we wanted to use the kitchen but it was for staff only. Instead we had to buy food at the bar (because you can't go outside) and its expencive. Feels like the main effort is to find ways to take ur money. The wifi hardly worked and usually didnt. The bar and pool are very nice but i came back to san jose and stayed somewhere else since it wasn't very fun staying there.

My room 44's door appeared to have been kicked-in in the past. The door frame was just glued back together. Next time I will pay more, because I want a private shower & in-room valuables box. I can afford to pay more for the good service. The Pangea's efficient airport shuttle and safe walkable downtown location are outstanding. Will definitely use the Pangea for my Costa Rice vacation in 2014 My first night was too near the bar music, so I had to sleep with ear plugs until midnight.

Nice place if you just need to spend a night or two in San Jose. Can be a little noisy at night, but otherwise good. Also, it is a very secure place. Finally, the "like Costa Rica Hostel Network on FaceBook and get a free drink" is kind of a scam. You get two mini shots of some random alcohol.

My only suggestions would be to make sure all of the rest rooms have the sign about not tossing paper in the toilet. I used the same stall the first 3 days and there was no sign. I felt pretty guilty when I finally used the other stall w/proper signage. Also, private rooms could use a small table for belongings & a hook or 2 for jackets or drying suits/towels. I didn't really like having to spread my things on the floor to dry. Otherwise everything was GREAT, everyone was super helpful, thanks!

The best thing about this hostel is the staff. Otherwise this was a terrible situation. Drunks all night, booming music all night, pounding base all day. No way to sleep coming in from a long night's flight. At 8 or so am I had to go sleep in the bar- where the music was turned on full blast. People slammed their doors at 3 am. If this is your thing, hey go for it. Be careful of the four in one tours- they are cattle car events for mucho dinero. Bad choice. Travel desk guy was terrific.

Good hostel. Safe area and close to city center. But staff not always very friendly. Wifi often very slow or even not working sometimes. If you're looking for a typical costarican place, definitely not a good choice.

We stayed in a couple of hostels while we were transferring through San Jose. This was by far the best place. Its about as close as you will get to bus stops, has unbelievable facilities including a swimming pool, internet, huge bathroom, restaurant / bar and televisions in the upstairs area.

Thin walls, very loud atmosphere. Hard to sleep. No outlets to charge electronics in your room which was very frustrating. Gave phone to reception to charge and they turned it on when I had purposefully turned it off when I gave it to them. Sketch. Needed to get to Monteverde and guy talked us out of public bus- told us to get shuttle which would be $45pp then the guy came in late said there were no more shuttles and had to get a $200 private shuttle. Not appreciated.

The navette from the airport is really helpfull, even if we had to wait like 1h30 outside de airport with our luggages because not everyone in the navette was arriving at the same time... The staff is really cool, especially the guy at the tours infos desk, very helpful and nice. The dorms are ok, I was hoping for some lockers to put my bag in at least they had little locker in the lobby. Over all an anazing hostel, night life and the chilling spot on the roof with stars and pool is incredible!

Excellent location, close to Avenida Central where you can find some cheap reataurants. But if you don't feel like leaving the hostel at night, you always have the option to eat at the hostel; it's a bit pricey, but it's good! The hostel is very close to an Bank and a 24/7 convenient store. Good place to meet people. Most of them just arrived or are about to leave so you can get a few infos about where to go and what to avoid!

Not a bad place, disappointed that there was no kitchen. We couldn't even boil water for tea or oatmeal.

Hostel Pangea has lots going for it...a good location, swimming pool, bar and restaurant ,and staff who are helpful. However the overall feel of the place is that of a large corporation - they have loads of stupid rules and you feel that they are constantly trying to squeeze more money out of you, eg $5 if you want to stay in the bar/restaurant after checkout, they can sell your room if you arrive an hour later than planned and you cannot check in early even if the room is ready
