I stayed just one night in Hostel Republica. The hostel has a great location, around the Republic Museum, a important touristic spot in Rio. The hostel don't charge any money for the towels and padlocks. The for bed room where I slept was clean. Althought my genereal experience with the hostel was very positive I think they could improve area where the travelers can meet the others. I'm sure that with some changes in the strcture it is possible to be much more attractive for travelers.

Everything was good, except that the hostel did not allow us to leave our luggage at the reception after we checked out in the morning. Our bus leaving Rio was in afternoon, and we had no place to put our luggage, which was very inconvenient. They should allow guest to leave their bags at the reception at our own risks, instead of not allowing us to leave it there at all.

Staff was really nice and helpful. They were all really efficient. But the room was pretty bad. Dirty, with an awful smell and bed were not good at all. As far as location is concern, the only good thing is that it is close to a subway station but the neighborhood itself is dreadful. Pay some little more and choose from plenty of other options at Botafogo or Copacabana.

Breakfast was awful every single day. Two mornings we went for breakfast at 8.30, and cofee/milk was out. We asked for milk: the first morning, thay did not take more, the second, a box with cold milk and no more cofee. We needed to change the room when we arrived because a strong urine smell in the room. We moved to room number two, and there was also a strange smell, like humidity. The attendance in teh reception was always good.

We only spent one night in this hostel and stayed in a private double room. The room and the bathroom were okay. Unfortunately, we had to leave early so that we had no time to try out the breakfast.

The staff when we arrived was not to friendly at all and it seemed like she didn't care if it took her 10 minutes or an hour to book us in...they ran out of towels so we did not get any ... We opened the door to our dirty room and it smelt like someone died in there. The room was not clean or cleaned prior. someone's clothes filled the closets that were suppose to be empty. Our 2 bed room consisted of 4 broken beds and our A\C didn't work properly. Lacation was prime and thats it

OMG it was a nightmare-staff speaks no english, breakfast ALWAYS short of something, no safe at the reception and you could open our room door without the key in seconds. They probably do not clean there at all - common bathroom was so dirty it was disgusting. And the room! I really wish we took the tent and slept on the beach - the private room was TERRIBLE - stains on the walls, dirt everywhere and the best thing - MUSHROOMS growing on the floor. Not mold but 10 cm mushrooms. How good is that?

Worst hostel I've ever been.Very dirty and disgusting. The bathroom is dirty 24/7. Bedsheeds with dirt smudges.Toilets&showers have been 1 floor under my room.Refridgerator 3 floors under my room.Lookers were kind of broken. In 2 min everybody could have opened it. Room was unbelievable small. Breakfast: just bread and melon. A very little kitchen for a lot of guests.Refridgerato was always so full that I couldnt put my things inside. Staff didnt know ANYthing. Not even how to get to the airport

I love the place - it has everything you need from a good hostel. Location (2 mins walk from Catete metro), restuarants (a lot down the road), 30 mins to Ipanema and Leblon during busy hours and friendly staff. I stayed in a 6 bed room and it was clean, did not smell bad at all and the men's bathroom was surpisingly clean! I highly recommend this place as you can get to all the major sights very easily.

The staff were all mentally slow, no fun intended! They do speak English but can't be of any sorry of help. The showers was burning hot and electricity came sparking out from one shower. The location is super and the breakfast ok.

We used it pretty much as a crash pad and it was perfect for what we needed. Free WiFi in the lobby but not in our room. Room was basic but clean. Unfortunately the walls were paper thin so you heard EVERYTHING that was going on around you. Our room was above next doors Karaoke bar so the first few nights were a bit sleepless. The female receptionist was very helpful, the male was not. Breakfast was free and filled us up until dinner time. 1 minute away from metro.

The location of the hostel is good. near to metro station and not far away from downtown. Unfortunatelly the staff is quite slow, so you have to be raedy to wait a little before there will be your turn and only some persons speak English and not all of they do speak Spanish,

- The staff didn't know how to speek spanish, they didn't even try to understand me. If you work in a hostel is important to speek in another language. - The beds SO UNCOMFORTABLE - The cleanliness was perfect, the cleaning ladies were nice and honest. We didn't know that people will enter in the bedroom and we left notebooks, ipods, and all was there when we came back. The security in that sense was great. - The TV never worked. I told the staff and no one did a thing.

Been there in the New Year's Eve, so it was a difficult time for any hostel in Rio de Janeiro. However, the staff was not prepared (1 hour for check-in and another hour for check-out...) and some phones were stolen in my room by a guy that got in during the night. The regular staff was away on holidays for what I understood. Way too hot during the summer too. Nice common room anyway.

We stayed here one night, it cost us 130 Reis per person for private twin double with ensuite. Terrible staff ignored us at reception, no english, no advice or help. They couldnt care less. Messy, unwelcoming reception. Room was the ultimate let down, for the price. Bare, disgusting beds (though comfty once you can get past the stains). Showers worked ok but sparked electricity on and off! Aircon old and rusty, no security. Felt seedy, dodgy. Main street is safe enough though. Internet was fast.
