the location is good because close to the subway, and the beach. the room are big, but there was a really bad smell. there is only 1 computer with internet, for 100persons! it´s a big hostel with a poor character. but it´s cheaper than the others hostel in the area.

positive: very good location, near to a supermarket and to the subway station; good price for Rio; good breakfest. negative: rude personal (specially the receptionist at night - she said me "sorry", she was "tired"); the street can be very loud at night; many (the most?) guests are actually brazilian workers - not young people in vacation in Rio

Well, everything works, but not fine. Hardly ever we got transport and tourist information from staff, only 2 hours of poor and small availability break fast. Musty smell room and the cleaning woman enter without ceremony on the couple private room.

I made a reservation but never confirmed the booking or replied to any of our emails. Bathroom needs to be cleaned better. Staff were just rude. Internet was not working very well. The rooms are a disaster. Bad location. It was a very bad experience.

Better computer systems, I was put into a dorm room with no bed, then into a dorm room with a broken bed and no lockup security cabinet for my backpack :-(

This is an old, smelly (very smelly) place! I had a bad experience there... Was afraid that my bed can broke; bed strongly was unsteady; I was happy to sleep on the upper one.. Not all staff was helpful; unfortunately.. I don't recommend this hostel!!

We stayed here during carnival and found the staff very unhelpful regarding whereabouts to go/what was on. However, very secure and decent breakfast. Could do with air conditioning. Really big hostel but just no effort by staff to create an atmosphere.

Hostel was relatively new and while the staff were very friendly, they were relatively disorganised. One day my room was not cleaned though the broom was left in my room! Excellent location for Carnaval - only a few metro stops from Copacobana and Lapa (even walking distance) plus Flamengo beach even closer.

We made a booking for Hostel Republica in May 2011 for the Carnaval in February 2012. They took our deposit (49 EUR) but never confirmed the booking or replied to any of our emails.

bathroom needs to be cleaned better and more regularly... some staff were great whereas some were just rude... not much going on in terms of organised activities / tours or trying to make the place fun... internet was down for a couple of days which was very frustrating! kitchen missing basic utensils and pans with handles! (buy some new ones please!!) good value though and decent / safe location between the beaches and the centre / lapa and 1 min walk from metro station.. rio is amazing

The staff is really nice, friendly and helpfull! Even though sometimes they can be really laid back, but that didn't matter to us! Good and quiet location, nearby Lapa for good parties. Hostel looks really nice. The only bad thing is that they have not enough cooking facilities

Nice place, near to Catete underground station. Helpful staff. When I arrived, there was no locker available, but the problem was solved one day later. Good atmosphere, especially because it was during the Carnival.

Some great staff, but one really unhelpful and rude woman. Terribly organised, and no helpful advice from anyone. We were there a week and the room wasn't cleaned once - it was absolutely filthy in the room.

We were a little bit limited by our options when staying in Rio as it was NYE and prices in Copa and Ipanema were excessive! For this, Hostel Republica was cheap, had a really good location in Catete, was literally 2 minutes from the metro and you could be in Copa in 15 minutes, so it's a cheaper alternative to staying in the main part. The rooms however had a really strange odour and were really dark, and the hostel doesn't really look like it does it the pictures. I'd describe it as "adequate"

The cheapest place I could find to stay over New Years! Was in a nice and safe area in Catete. Pretty good kitchen facilities, friendly staff although not all of them speak great English, Spanish is okay though. Good computer and wifi facilities and TV room. Kitchen downstairs was a great place to meet people and party the night away!
