We booked Shakti as it was easily the cheapest hostel that was listed in San Jose and so we were expecting it to be a little rough round the edges. However it turned out to be a great little family run hostel, the rooms were a decent size, they were spotless, the food in the restaurant downstairs is great too. The only negatives are there's not a huge amount going on around it (bars etc are a little walk away) and only one or two of the family speak English so you'll need your phrasebook handy!
