About Hostel Lao
Lao is our house. For 3 years we have been welcoming travellers to stay with us, enjoy our home and see a more Mendozan side to the city. With just 24 beds to keep things friendly, chilled and clean; Lao is a traveller’s oasis in the middle of a great city. A social, lively home, NOT a party hostel! A friend’s house where you can meet people and relax.
The house is located in a busy corner of the city within 15 minutes walk of everything so it’s ideal for getting to know Mendoza on foot. A five minute walk from the hostel passing a beautiful square with an antique market, local deli’s and restaurants will get you to the Main Street running right through the city. Continue on from here to reach plazas España or Independencia and the pedestrian streets. 10 minutes in the other direction and you are in the bus station. Across the road from the hostel you will find buses to the wine districts surrounding the city. If you want to get off the Gringo Trail just ask us for directions.
Our home is a 70 year old town house that we have slowly renovated to create 2 six bed dorms with a bathroom each and a 4 bed ensuit dorm. All equipped with aircon/heaters, a large locker per person, real mattresses, comfy pillows and duvets for winter. Dorms you can sleep well in. Next we converted the former servant’s quarters into 2 cosy doubles sharing a bathroom. Set in the stunning hostel garden surrounded by tropical trees and hammocks, these rooms are ideal for some privacy away from the house. Finally we opened 2 luxury doubles so couples can enjoy the fun atmosphere of a hostel with the comforts of boutique hotel rooms. La Cava, a large room with furniture created from the original woods salvaged during the renovation, a big iron bed, cable TV, aircon/heating and a fantastic ensuit. Tango; the biggest room in the house, complete with sofa, cable TV, ensuit, aircon/heating and a fantastic hand carved bed.
Lao also has 2 large stylish lounges, a fully equipped kitchen, dinning room, 1st floor terrace overlooking our amazing garden, a plunge pool, some free wine from our cellar at 8pm tue-sat, a huge BBQ area, great included breakfast of fruit, juice, pastries, fresh bread, homemade jams and coffee and tea, and we have 2 friendly dogs to play with!
Our home is the perfect place from which to enjoy the Mendozan winter. With a real fire ideal for bringing your Malbec up to room temperature, heating throughout, warm duvets, a big leather sofa to cuddle up on, or why not huddle round the BBQ fire and prepare a great steak under the stars. We also serve afternoon tea from May-September!
