went to hamburg for a conference, staying at helgoland was perfect: calm, secure, bus and underground near by, just 15 minutes to university BUT if you go to hamburg to party...you probably chose another place

This hotel is a time machine which brings you back to 80's, with all good and ungood.

Great hotel for the price! The location was the biggest (only) downside - it is about a 10 minute walk from the S bahn station and then the train did not come by very frequently plus it was a 10 minute ride into Hamburg. But, the room was nice and clean and the staff was very helpful!

Nice hotel and really clean room and helpful staff. Took about 35 min to get to the hotel and it was not an interestng area. But good for a one night hotel if you are not there to see hamburg.

very warm in the room when the windows are closed, and very noisy when they are open...

The staff was very helpful and did everything to satisfy our needs. Delicious breakfast.

This hotel was very good for the price you pay, it´s clean and the staff is very friendly and helpful. If you´re looking for the "backpacking ambiance" this is NOT the place for you, but if you want to get some sleep it´s OK. The thing is that it is REALLY FAR FROM THE CITY CENTER... you have to walk 20 min. to the nearest S-Bahn station and then ride in the S-Bahn for at least 15 min. to get to the city center, which for us was really bad. I recommend you find a hostel or hotel downtown.

a quiet neighborhood but a 5 minutes walk away from the U/S bahn so perfect if you prefer to sleep away from the city centre.

Nice Hotel

5km from the city center

we had a room on the side of the road, the room was very hot, and when we opened the windows for a cool breese we heard much noise from the passing cars on the road. So we recommend a room onthe other side off the hotel.

10 mins walk from an s-bahn station, only a few stops from the main nightlife area. nicely stocked minibar. toilets and shower in room. about 15 euro in a taxi from the main station. no complaints.

Not air-conditioned

The staff were not very friendly or helpful at all, not even ONE smile from ANY member of staff. It was also quite a walk away from a train station, but there was an occasional bus. The corridors on each floor were very poorly lit and even during the day they were actually dark - as the lighting was so poor. The room was a good size and clean, and it was nice for it to have a bath as well as shower. Nice room, bad hotel. I wouldnt really recommend this hotel, as its far from the city centre, the staff are unsatisfactory and the finishing touches of the hotel are simply not there. Glad to leave the place.

just a regular hotel but about 20 minute bus ride out of the city

We had a good time in Hotel Helgoland, but the location made things a little difficult. Although only ten minutes walk from the nearest S-bahn stop (Diebstich), the stop itself was in a very dodgy neighbourhood. I was scared walking to and from it with my boyfriend, especially at night. Had I been travelling on my own, I would have been terrified. It was not safe at all - poorly lit, a confusing route of stairs and bridges to get to the platform... it looked like mugging central. I would not reccommend Helgoland to female travellers or solo travellers, unless you plan to taxi into the center every day (approx 10-15 euros). Apart from the location, the hotel was very good.

This was a great place to stay. It is more of a hotel than a hostel, but it was very clean and far exceeded the expectations

purpose: overnight stay in connection with a ballet. convienient to stay in Hamburg.

Their listing on hostel world is misleading to say the least. The have no "double beds" in the hotel. (Or so we were told.) We had twin beds next to each other. Also it's not really near Altona Station. There's a S-Baun line near by but we got off at Altona and took a cab because we couldn't find it. These two things gave us a bad first impression. Other than that things were okay.

Bit removed from things. Hotel is well worth it if you want a quiet, clean place to stay. Not much to do in the neighborhood.
