I must say the thought of having a private room after staying in dorms seemed like a great idea at the time, but it was bloody freezing. the foot heaters they supplied in the private rooms got as hot as a luke warm cup of tea. so for someone like me who needs warmth to sleep i had to pile on two sets of clothes and 2 pairs of socks. the common room of the hotel is great though, and its a great place to meet ppl and stay warm!. also bikes here cost 500 per day and they are a quite old.

Second visit here: the hotel is improving: they built new toilets on the first floor and are working on the shower room. Otherwise remember there is no heating or A/C in the rooms...

Hotel Toyo is a great cheap hostel in the south part of the city. Great, very close access to a subway and JR station make for easy access to anywhere in the city and beyond for day trips. The private rooms are Japanese style - small but perfect for an individual, and after dorm rooms it was nice to have a bit of privacy for a few days - at a dirt cheap price! The common areas are really homely, great mix of people too, some long stayers who really help know the city! Excellent Value for Money.

I should note that this is easily the cheapest place to stay in Osaka. At 1500 a night, it doesn't get cheaper than this. So if that's your most important criterion, then this is the place to go. > LOCATION = close to subway (+) | close to spa world (+) | dumpy part of town (---) > FACILITIES = old (-) | dingy (-) | unheated shower rooms (---) > ATMOSPHERE = no events (-) | unpopulated common room (-) Not a bad place to stay if you want to see Osaka, but you get what you pay for.

Perfect for just a night. The rooms are clean and warm, come with a nice in-bed heater to keep you warm. The free Wi-fi is amazing! And the staff carried our 20kg suitcases upstairs for us! Only downfall is the bathrooms. There is only one shower block for the building and as a girl you've got to get the staff to lock it so that you are the only person in there. There are mostly Japanese style toilets too, but on the ground floor are brand new lovely, clean western style toilets so find those!

It was freezing cold in the hostel. But the location was good and the staff was friendly. The good thing about that hostel is that you have private rooms and WiFi is in the every room.

I like it. It's real value for money. Don't expect the Ritz Carlton hotel. This hotel is a rudimentary & basic hostel that shelters you for several days of one's journey in Osaka. The train stations are conveniently nearby as well as several affordable food stalls like 100 yen convenience store & a bento shop that sells rice meals for around 300 yen. Of course, a little knowledge of Japanese phrases come in handy. The baths are communal, there's no central heating but the wi-fi is tops!

Ok the hostel is very conveniently located and the staff is friendly. But it just looks like a prison, rooms and corridors are very austere. Bathrooms are old, dirty and smelly. I think this place is ok if you're a broke male backpacker and that you're staying in Osaka for 1 or 2 nights. I don't recommend it for couples or long stays.

This hotel is good for the price it offers, the cheapest in Osaka maybe. The room is small and mine was full of smell of cigarette. The heater didn't work but the TV worked well. I just don't like the urinals and bathroom. I have no problem with the location since it is a short walk from JR station or private railway station.

The poorest area of Japan - would NOT recommend to solo female travelers. Hotel hasn't been upgraded or renovated for probably 40 years. Rooms have no heat nor A/C. Only 2 showers for the whole building (over 100 rooms)! When a woman takes a shower nobody else can use the bathroom (despite separate stalls) - which mean you WILL wait sometime hours to take a shower. Good wifi and low prices are the only redeeming factors.

The location is good. The staff are very nice and helpful. The single room is not huge but its really all the space one person needs.

This hotel is literally good for only an overnight stay. I don't mind community bathrooms. However, I didn't like the fact that the bathrooms nor the showers were separated by gender. I saw urinals and assumed they were men bathrooms but the staff told me that everyone used the same bathroom. Wasn't a fan of that.

Best value deal in the area. Close to transportation, affordable price for the city. Rooms are standard size (for Japan, so seem small to most people). Facilities were generally clean, well maintained, common room well arranged 2 working computers with internet and some japanese litterature. Staff was extremely helpful and spoke perfect english. Use of the bathroom for female guests is a bit annoying as you need to report to reception when you are going to take a shower. was ok for just 1 night.

A clean and nice budget hostel. A Japanese friend told us Osaka is the most dangerous city in Japan and Nishinari is the most dangerous place in Osaka but Japan is a safe country, there's no need to over-worry. He also warned us the rooms in Hotel Toyo is very tiny. We find the size of the twin room reasonable. We only need a clean place to sleep, so we are not too particular with anything else.

I would defo use this place as a base if you are on a budget. You can do day trips to nara park and surrounds even kyoto, once you have your jr pass.almost japanese style beds, location is good in osaka and very near the train stations and metro.2nd cheapest place i found in japan.staff were very helpful but one thing, charging me 500 yen for an adaptor when you could by it in the local shop for 130 yen was a bit steep.Still recommend it tough
