Fantastic location in Gion with subway and buses very close by. Staff was by far the most amazing aspect of this hostel. Employees wrre super nice and went above and beyond to help me out from providing maps to offering me food. They defined the experience! Just an FYI there are no lockers but I never had anything taken. The house itself is a unique fun experience

Wonderfully traditional building over 100 years old. I enjoyed staying in the tatami style room (my first time in Japan). The size is quite intimate yet still very comfortable, making it quite easy to meet other travelers. Was a wonderful experience that I will cherish for a long time.

Lovely stay here - much like a homestay with tatami mats and the family are very warm it was so cozy and comfy and old and dark like a traditional place you would imagine in kyoto plus right on geisha street perfect location. owners were so kind printing directions to my next hostel in tokyo for me for free and have refunded the deposit as i sort of double booked but didnt cancel it properly. not that i minded but for security maybe more for the room as easy for anyone to come in but not big prb

Hostel is so peaceful its definitely more a guesthouse and you stay pretty much with the owners family in tatami mats. I made friends with my two female roomies and we went temple hopping on bikes together. the owner showed where we could rent the bikes on a map. location of hostel is perfect on geisha street. nice fast laptop, hairdryers, but mostly it was a very cozy lounge area that felt very traditional. I slept so well in this hostel and felt very at home and its walking distance to all!

the location is perfect!Staff are helpful and friendly, but the bath rooms are not enough. anyway, it's a great choice in Kyoto!

Excellent hostel/guesthouse for those looking for a more "home"-style atmosphere. The house has beautiful elements of traditional japanese interior decoration and for some inexplicable reason this works amazingly well with the Michael Buble they play on their sound system! The location, being in the middle of Gion, could not have been better for the price. The staff and owners are also very helpful if you have any questions or need anything.

Location is awesome, it's in the hub of the city. the staff is knowledge and give me insightful tips to get around with maps and personal recommendations. I love the ambience of the setting. Everything in the hostel is so traditionally Japanese and aesthetically pleasing. Good value for money. Don't miss it if there's still room. This is my hostel living experience so far.

A home from home with a great welcome, such a friendly place to stay. Perfect location to which explore the city.

Awesome location, nice staff! Only downturn was that shower time is limited after check out (and costs extra 300 yen). Besides that one of the best places I've stayed!

An all around amzing hostel; clean, quiet, directly in town and with friendly staff that took us out for activities twice in less than a week.

This hostel is the best one we've stayed in so far. The building is beautiful and the style is traditional with wooden interiors. And the staff is amazing - they even invited us out one night! Definitely recommendable.

IchiEnSou is a great hostel in a very central part of Kyoto. Yashi (the owner/manager) is a very friendly and helpful guy. The dorm rooms are spacious and clean, and there is a very nice common area, as well as solid Wi-Fi access. One suggestion for improvement would be to improve the access to bathrooms/showers for men. The upstairs shower isn't always available, and to use the restroom you need to take a long walk downstairs.

Yashi (owner) is the bomb. The place is quaint (in a good way) and has a great common space. Comfortable beds, too. Best part is probably the fact it's in Gion, right in the middle of the Higashiyama area so there are a lot of major attractions (as well as public transit connections) nearby.

Lovely hostel! Staff were great and really friendly. The rooms are really spacious and the general atmosphere is very relaxed. Great place to stay whilst temple hopping in Kyoto!
