I read some bad reviews recently but I have to say its not true - they dont force things on you with loads of tours, they just offer them once and leave it up to you....staff are really friendly and will help with anything when you ask, the location is great too....alex, rafael and bruno and all staff are all really nice guys, cant speak more highly of them!!

The hostel is on the gay spot of Rio de Janeiro. Not that´s a problem, but it´s nice to know where you´re staying. The Hostel has no air conditioning system, and in rio that´s necessary, especially at night! It´s not so clean, and the matressess are not so good. The crew is excellent and very helpful and funny. It´s really close to the beach and in a safe area, in the middle of a lot of hostels. There´s always somenthing to do, and they are happy to help. All and all, it´s nice.

Already when we entered the hostel, we wondered about the good ratings. Here´s why: Rooms: Sticky & hot, windows only to the hostel inside, fans broken & therefore like windmachines - not ajustable. Sleeping almost impossible. Kitchen: Dirty, hardly equipped. Lockers: 1/2 of them broken. Stuff: Persistently tries to sell your tours and parties, instead of indicating the free local street parties, which take place from tuesday to friday.   Read Owner Comments

I recently stayed at the wave hostel. The rooms were basic, but had everything you needed. The communal area is great which is where you meet a tonne of great people. Alex and Raphael are fantastic, giving great tips and helping out whenever needed. Bruno runs a great little bar up the top of the hostel and also hosts a number of great parties during the week, especially the Monday night boat party. This is a basic hostel that is made great by it's location and the people running it.

If you´re a traveller whose independent spirit is still alive you´ll probably not enjoy this hostel. It´s atmosphere of guests getting drunk and watching telly is rather suffocating - as is the staff, who, although friendly and helpful, persistently try and sell you their tours and nights out. The breakfast is very poor and rooms uncomfortable. On the plus side the kitchen, free internet and great location came in very handy for a few days on a budget, but overall would certainly not recommend.   Read Owner Comments

The hostel was everything that i hoped it would be and more. The location was perfect for finding food, night life and just a short walk to the beach. The staff was helpful in finding local activities or attractions which seemed to be overwhelming with the amount of things to pick from. Especially Alex and Brunno... both were able to point me in the right direction and see a side of Rio that is missed by most travelers. Next time i am in Rio i am diffidently staying at the Wave hostel.
