Great location for the party people, but the cleanliness of this place is beyond words. We checked in to find tissues full of blood over the floor, someone's skateboard under the bed and the bathroom was so dirty I showered at the beach. The girls next door had roaches in their room. Backpacking hostels can be nasty but this is filthy! Apart from the location, nice reception staff and good internet facilities, I would NEVER go here!

The location of Islander Backpackers is excelent! Maybe the atmosphere in the hostel is not as good as other ones (i been in other hostels in surfers) but its a huge hostel with an amazing and big swimming pool, one floor with kitchen, common room and big tv screen plus some tables and a bbq place outside. It was pretty good.

Had a dorm with balcony overlooking the pool and even with sea view. You have big lockers in the room which even fit big backpacks. You are close to bars and the beach. Would stay again!

An excellent choice of place to stay in Surfers. It is a hostel/hotel and has all the facilities of a hotel. Fantastic location. Rooms a bit pricey compared to other hostels but worth it. If you don't book online and just walk in, you can often get a dorm bed for almost half the price. Wish I had known this. Renting cutlery is a pain but standard in Australia. Would definitely return to this hostel.

The leaking tab in the bathroom got fixed after several days. And the staff was not that friendly. But the location was good.

The door lock is not working properly (you can push the door and it open easily without the key), The water & shower tap keeps dropping water, cockroachs are walking around.

the dorm i stayed in only had one fan that did not do much, and being on the top bunk, it was very hot in the room. however the rooms had a tv, cupboards and a fridge which were handy. its a great location if you want to be near all the surfers attractions. nice to have a pool, bbq area, tennis courts, and a cheap bar/pub down stairs. staff were all really friendly and helpful. good value for money!

It would have been useful to have been told before booking that local (ie non-international tourists) would be required to buy the mad travel card before they could stay Having the plates available as a set to borrow for a deposit was a good idea however (and I know this is somewhat out of the contol of the hostel) it was disgusting the mess that was left in the kitchen and the lack of effort put in by guests cleaning up after themselves - maybe a similar system needs to be there for other items

I accidentally booked for the wrong night, showing up a day early. The place was booked out but the staff were really helpful with the whole situation and we worked everything out so I wasn't on the streets. Trever and Ben went over and above. Next time I'm on Gold Coast I wouldn't hesitate staying here.

There was an abusive altercation with other people staying at the hostel which should've been addressed more seriously by the security, also there was beer stickers stuck to the beds, chewing gum in the beds, sauce dried onto the side of them, the balcony was sticky, old hairs in the bathroom. I get that it was cheap accommodation, but it would've been nice to have the room properly cleaned before we checked in.

Effectively a wing of an hotel, this is not a typical hostel. However, you do get a decent room with a shower etc.. while no air-con. Location is great - only 5 min walk to the beach and right on the main street. Good view from the rooms too. Would recommend.

Since the hotel is off the strip the traffic is extremely noisey. Rooms on the backpacker side were pretty rowdy too. The property felt more like a hotel than a hostel and I would recommend it to people. We were sad that they shut the games room at night as we were excited to spend our night on old school arcade games. The receptio on the hostel side were more help than the hotel side. We are a couple in our early 30's. Location is excellent!

More of a hotel than a hostel, very strange having a "dorm" with a TV. This should just be re-branded as a budget hotel rather than advertised as a hostel.
