The hostel was pretty nice and the staff were helpful when I wanted to go to something specific. It was close to the JR station however, it was hard to locate it because the sign was on the second story level so we passed right under it. There wasn't much character or warmth to the place.

I like Takayama City. It's quiet town with beautiful view (Red Bridge, Morning Market and Shirakawago village). Also love this hostel with best location (near train station) with quite clean space. Have kitchen, we can cook that can't do this in hotel.

I had a single room and it was enormous. The futon was really comfortable to sleep on too. The staff was very helpful and suggested a lot of things to do and places to eat. It's also very easy to walk to from the station and close to the old houses across the river.

I'm really glad to have visited Takayama and the Japanese Alps! Do rent a car when ur there it gives you a lot of freedom to travel around. The hostel is good, rooms spacious and the staff is friendly. There is only no elevator if u have huge heavy luggage it can be a bit inconvenient. For the rest had a perfect stay!

We only spent a night over J-Hoppers, but wished to have spent many others - we were impressed by the courtesy of the staff and by the room standard - we had a twin room, with bathroom and toilet, and it was the best value we got for the money it cost, in terms of cleanliness, location, Japanese atmosphere, etc. Also, smoking facilities present, which in Takayama is not exactly available everywhere.

The location--halfway between the rail/bus stations and the historic town center--could not be beat. I had a private room that was very clean and I appreciated having a window that opened. However, having to trek down two flights of steep stairs to take a shower was not pleasant as I have severe arthritis. The staff was very nice and helpful. The hostel is really short, though, on comfortable lounge space. The kitchen was well equipped but short on seating.

We appreciate the free using of hair drier. Thank you. Anyway, it lookls like anyone can enter in the hostel at anytime as no staff is available during day time.

Good location, close to train station an major sights in Takayama. The hostel is clean but the infrastructure looks kind of old. Staff is very helpful. If you go in winter or spring, bring warm clothes with you, It's freezing in the hole buliding. Kitchen is all right.

I had a great stay at J-Hoppers Takayama. Excellent location, as it is only a few minutes walk away from Takayama train station, spotlessly clean, lots of showers and comfortable beds. Staff are very knowledgeable and went out of their way to help me - even offering me a coat when I didnt have one for my walk up to Hida Folk Village in the snow. Snow boots and umbrellas are provided and the communal DVD room is lovely and cosy. Cant fault this place!

This was my second time staying at J-Hoppers Takayama. The staff were cool even though I only had a short stay. I stayed on a different floor this time and I noticed that there are plenty of restrooms thoughout the hostel. Sometimes at other hostels you have to take a dump really badly and all the toilets are taken, but that's not a problem here.
