The best facet of Jaffa Gate is its location, within the Old City gates but also close to bars, shops, and the tram on Jaffa Road in the New City. Given that lodging in Jerusalem is quite expensive, this is a good deal. My private room was fairly nice. However, this is one of those hostels with minimal character. The place could be cool -- there's a spartan-decorated roof and two living rooms in a historic building -- but no one seems to have tried to create a social or homey atmosphere.

The hostel itself was above average; but the staff were SPECTACULAR! I have never been treated better by the staff of a hostel. For this reason I would reccommend Jaffa Gate Hostel whole-heartedly.

The hostel is wonderfully placed: less than 200 meters from Holly Sepulcher. But it's dirty, there is no water in the shower... at least not allways and rarely hot. Thereis absolutely no service. It'scold (in november) and the furniture are dirty and inadequate (no towels, no good sheets, etc.) I recommend a sleeping bag to stay there.

The room was shabby, damp and cold, with mold growing in the bathroom. The shared kitchen was very dirty. Also the place lacks the atmosphere that many israeli hostels have, and is way too expensive for what is offered.
