Great experience to sleep in a jailcell. Loved everything. Only thing I missed was a nightlamp at my bed.

It's a nice hostel, comfy but the location is not that good, i had to walk 1h to go to the intercity bus station. Nobody have been in this hostel a long time so it's kind of hard to meet people there.

Hi there, Thank you for taking the time to rate our hostel. We are sorry that you didn't find out about the blue bus line which goes very close to the intercity bus stop. Our friendly reception wardens are always on hand to give our guests transport advice and options. Although most of our guests only stay a couple of days we have plenty of communal areas where our guests can chat while cooking, eating or relaxing by the T.V or cinema room. Once again thank you for your valuable feedback. We hope to see you back in Jail very soon. All the best The Jailhouse Team.

Hi there, Thank you for taking the time to rate your stay and we're glad to hear that overall you had a great time in Jail. Your feedback regarding the bathroom window has prompted us to cover it for extra privacy. We hope your husband didn't have to wait too long to use the bathroom facilities and we wonder if he encountered it at a high usage time. We're really sorry about that and it'd unfortunately something that can't be remedied easily. We're very restricted with what we can change in a historic building. Once again thank you for your valuable comments and we hope to see you in Jail again very soon. Kind regards The Jailhouse team

Very interesting experience, and a good use of the old, historic jail facility. No real complaints about the facility itself (kitchen is a little constrained, but ok) BUT: the location is lacking. It's right at the edge of the industrial district and a good walk to downtown. If you leave the facility, turn LEFT on Lincoln, not RIGHT! To the left you'll find a few stores and some pubs, but to the right is a vast wasteland of car lots.

Hi and thanks for taking the time to review us, glad you enjoyed the historic aspect of the Jail. We are working on adding more historical display information. Actually if you walk to the right on Lincoln Rd you very quickly get to Hagley Park and it is a nice walk alongside this to the Avon River for punting, and then the Worldclass Botanical Gardens, Museum and to the CBD re-start Mall. Unfortunately I think you must have made another right turn somewhere, sorry about that!

Lovely hostel with all those funny references to jail/convicts. Clean, friendly staff. Definitely recommended, one of the best in CHCH. Possible to walk to city center. Internet isn't unfortunately free.

Very cool place to stay! Sleeping in a cell is definitely something. Kitchen was superb - clean and lots of stuff provided. You could lend movies for free and everything was very clean. Staff was nice and helpful.

Was sleeping in 10 room dorm. and was on the top bunk. so scary getting up and down that small ladder, whole bed bunk nearly tipped over every time i went down. The railing at the end of the bed and on the sides that were suppose to help me up were not tightly fitted making it unsafe.

Hi there, Thank you for taking the time to rate our hostel and it's good to see from your score that you enjoyed your stay overall. We're sorry to hear that you encountered problems with your dorm bed and we really hope that you were able to alert a staff member so that they could go and check your bed for you or change you to a bottom bunk if it was available. Our bunk beds were designed for, and used by athletes for the commonwealth games and the general feedback from our guests suggest that they are both sturdy and very comfortable. The safety rail is meant to fit tightly but we agree with repeated use that it may become loose. Your comments have prompted us to check all our bunk beds and do any necessary maintenance. Once again thank you for your valuable comments Kind regards The Jailhouse team

Staff were very friendly and helpful. The "cell" layout was awkward but beds were comfortable. Unfortunately, it was quite noisy, making it difficult to sleep well. The Cinema Room was awesome for watching movies and having a stack of board games there was great.

In general we had a great stay at the Jailhouse Accomodation and will be staying there again in a few days. Staff was fantastic. We expected the rooms to be tiny, however, a few more choices to place clothes would be appreciated - as well as an elevator... Location is a bit off, but on the other hand staff was very helpful in organizing transport or giving information in this regard.

We're sorry and very disappointed that you encountered some cleanliness issues in your room. I was very inconvenienced by the small number of bathroom facilities. (I had a singleroom, share bathroom.) I've stayed in many many Backpacker places, but I've never had to wait for facilities as I had to at Jailhouse. O for a sink in my room! (Shower and lavatory I don't need). I also found the practice of turning off the lights at NINE PM bizarre. Why continue the Jailhouse theme in the bathrooms? Couldn't they be made attractive? Less institutional? Ditto the Kitchens. How about replacing o

Hi there, Thank you for taking the time to rate our hostel. We're sorry that you had you had to wait when trying using our bathroom facilities and we wonder if you encountered them at a high usage time. We find that most of the time the bathroom facilities to guest ratio works really well. Very occasionally all our guests may all want to get ready for their day at the same time which we can understand can be very frustrating! Unfortunately the situation can't be easily remedied due to our building being historic, and therefore we are restricted with making changes to the building. We decided to keep with the Jail theme throughout the building as a lot of our guests like to see the original features and get a feel of what it used to look like. Once again thank you for your valuable comments Kind regards The Jailhouse team

Nice, clean place. Stayed here twice for one night only, couldn't say too much about the location except that it's reasonably close to the train station. The facilities are good overall, but the couches are the most uncomfortable I have ever sat on...
