Very welcoming reception. Very efficiently managed and well organized. Lots of room in my 10 bed dorm which has an ensuite toilet (although with no hot water). The hostel succeeds at making it a quiet atmosphere after 9 pm. It is a bit of a walk to the city centre and to the train station but there is a city bus stop almost at the door. Any mess, especially in the kitchen, is caused by the travellers. I would definitely go back and have tried but it fills up,very quickly.

This is absolutely the coolest hostel I have ever stayed. It's modified from a real historic prison - I mean, come on, what else can you ask for!?!? Even tho its not very close to town( there s not much to see in town anyways...), its coolness makes it a total winner. The hostel is probably the only thing cool in chch really... Definitely stay if you have a chance!

Very clean and the staff was accommodating. The rooms are small and sparse but clean, and hey, it's a former jail house so what do you expect?

Very unique accommodation. As we were in a private room I can't speak to whether there were lockers available in the dorms, but security-wise, no one was getting through those solid metal doors! The staff was very friendly.

I thought that there should of at least been some soap, face cloths and a shower mat for use in the bathroom. Shower pressure was excellent.

Hi there, Thank you for taking the time to rate our hostel and we are glad to see that overall you enjoyed your stay. We agree that the shower pressure is fantastic and we always get positive feedback about it. We find that most backpackers bring along their own towels, face cloths and toiletries but we do have shampoo/conditioner sachets available on request from reception and there are hand soap dispensers in all the bathrooms. We've taken on board your comment regarding a shower mat. We will discuss it with our management team to see if it's a viable request. Once again thank you for your comments and we hope to see you in Jail again very soon. Kind regards The Jailhouse Team

Hi there, Thank you for taking the time to rate our hostel and we're really sorry to hear about the problems you had with our bed linen. The linen is professionally laundered by an outside company and normally of a very high standard but we do accept that sometimes mistakes do happen and your comments have prompted us to investigate what might have happened to cause us to have soiled sheets delivered. We have also alerted our housekeeping staff to check linen more thoroughly before making up the beds. We wonder if you approached reception at a busy time and the staff member may have been dealing with several different things at the same time but we do think that it's unacceptable that you weren't acknowledged and we have therefore scheduled some more training with our team. We really hope that they came back promptly to help you and organize new bed linen. Once again thank you for your valuable comments. Kind regards The Jailhouse team

While I've given the Jailhouse good numbers, it was a terrible night's sleep. First, the noise from the atrium really carries even though the folks downstairs were trying to be quiet. Second, I was on a top bunk which had a railing on one side but was a half a meter away from a window on the other...I was terrified I would roll out of bed.

Hi there, Thank you for giving our hostel such a great rating and we hope that it indicates that overall you enjoyed your stay with us. We're sorry to hear that you encountered some problems with noise. We agree that the acoustics of the building mean that even small sounds carry far and we therefore have a strict 'silence after 9pm' policy in our atrium area. Our night reception staff encourage guests to move to another communal area after 9pm and we have signs up on the atrium doors to remind guests to adhere to the policy. With regards to the bunk we hope that the guard rail helped to make you feel safe. Our housekeeping team also make sure when making up the beds that the side nearest the window is pushed tight against the wall so it is very safe for the occupant. Some guests prefer bottom bunks and if available we are very happy to move someone on request. Once again thank you for taking the time to rate our hostel and your comments are very valuable. Kind regards The Jailhouse team

It's a jail. Cool atmosphere, but otherwise pretty average.

Not a lot of electricity plugs in the room, just one for a 10 bed dorm!

Hi there, Thank you for your valuable feedback and we're glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay overall. You are right that there are only limited electrical sockets in the 10 bed dorm. The reason for this is that the jail walls are approximately two feet thick and it's extremely difficult to install new wiring. We do have plenty of sockets in our communal areas. Our staff are also happy, on request to charge up electrical items in our office. Thanks again for your comments and we hope to see you in Jail again very soon. Kind regards The Jailhouse team

Good idea with the converted jailhouse. Beds were clean and comfortable. The only downside is that it is miles from everywhere. A shuttle bus system may be useful to guests as well as free wifi.
