It's a very good backpacker by no doubt. Kitchen is awesome. Staffs are extremely friendly and helpful. However, I recommend it to the people who travel with their car. It costs $2.8 to take a bus to city center, a bit expensive.

Absolutely cool place in old renovated prison...Cells, convicts clothes, entering \"jail\" photo...Very clean, spacious bathrooms...Great atmosphere

Really nice place, good rooms, novelty value, well run, good facilities. Would recommend this place, but have three gripes. Heating guys, it's winter on the South Island, and the toilets & showers are freezing. The rooms are cool as well, only 'heated by pipes'. The walk to town is about 20-25 mins, and the weekend girl on reception is uesless. (watching DVD's and never being at the desk is not working!) Read Owner Comments

a very cool place, staff were excellent, they facillitated my late check in with no problems. the main hall was a little chilly but so was christchurch when i was there. i had a great sleep in one of the dorms and wasnt cold at all. fantastic kitchen. bit of a walk into town but i didnt mind that as the jailhouse was a lovely place to stay. id rather stay there than in a horrble place in the centre just for the location.

Don't be put off by the fact that this hostel is not in the centre of town - it's only 15 minutes walk in and it's a nice walk via the park - plus there are some nice pubs and good takeaways close by. We had a great time there.
