Really nice place! Beautiful location, great atmosphere in the restaurant/taproom, and really nice and helpful staff. Plus it seemed like one of the cheaper options in Reykjavik. Plus: converted cookie factory, man

Great hostel with a lot of character; good location - easily walkable to main hub of town. Nice bathrooms but they weren't cleaned often enough, could be quite grotty in the mornings! 6-bed dorm was pleasant, very comfortable beds but not enough lockers. Hostelworld didn't make it clear that we'd have to pay for linen. Good tour desk and friendly staff but a bit slow so long queues at reception. Breakfast buffet was reasonably priced and very tasty. Would stay here again.

Loved this hostel. It has a brilliant atmosphere and some funky decorations. If I could have taken the black 1950's reclining chair and footstool home on the plane with me I would have. They have an amazing bookshelf with some interesting armchair reads, including National Geographic magazines from the 70's and 80's. Food is tasty and staff are friendly and good at recommending restaurants and local tours. Take a sleeping bag or linen costs extra.

Very nice hostel with excellent location. Hostel has a bar/restaurant, where the food is good, the noise is not disturbing sleeping. Been in many of the rooms around the building. Staff is very nice and helpful. Rooms are clean and beds comfortable. Good value.

Overall excellent. Really cool place that seems to attract a lot of locals to the bar. Decent kitchen and rooms were ideal for us.

I found the hostel to be absolutely charming. Great reception area and friendly staff. The bar was fantastic but expensive, however it was the same everywhere. The beer was like rocket fuel, which is great. The rooms were well kept and very clean. change the settings on the bedroom doors because certain travellers are very disrespectful and just let the door slam all hours of the night. Kex is the only hostel I have stayed in that actually charge you for bedding, which is cheeky. Great place.

We had an absolutely wonderful time while we stayed at KEX. We got dropped straight to the door from the airport bus which was really convenient. KEX hostel has a fantastic and funky vibe to it. I loved every aspect of it - the on call barbers, the bird cages on the roof, the delicious food and drinks from the downstairs restaurant. The staff were top notch - always happy to help with any questions we had or book last minute tours!

Loved this hostel. I stayed in a double room with shared bathroom with my 20 something daughter. Bathrooms and rooms were always clean, and the staff was super friendly and helpful. Breakfast was delicious and the atmosphere in common areas, from lounge, to kitchen, to restaurant was brilliant: cosy, hip, and friendly folks. I was there for 3 nights in Jan 2013, so can't say what it might be like in higher season. My daughter will def. return with friends.

Everything is so fine, except the room isn't so bright, so it sacred me a little when there was only me in the room. The public area is so lovely the atmosphere is relaxing, and you can order every tour easily here. The staff works 24 hours.

Unless you're traveling with a sleeping bag, you'll have to pay an additional 1000ISK there for linens and a towel (Not mentioned on their website) so that was slightly a surprise. I went with 4 people all together (3 separate rooms) and all of us had a great experience! Very cool place, the mood made you want to stay at hostels more and was a warm welcome from other hostels I have visited in the past.

This hostel has great facilities and I loved how the showers were separate bathrooms, was just like I was at home. It did lack atmosphere and we struggled to find people wanting to share a drink with us on a saturday night! The staff were great and really helpful helping us out about where to go out and with tours.

Highly recommended hostel. Perfect location downtown. Breakfast, and restaurant itself, is expensive but super delicious. And there are a ton of eclectic stores and good bakeries around. The staff are really helpful and kind; always ready if you need anything. The rooms are big, but there are not enough individual lockers for everyone in a 6-person dorm. Also the bathrooms would get really grimy by the end of the day (which is not the hostel's fault…but they were always clean in the morning!)

I LOVE Kex. I'm definitely staying there next time I'm in Iceland. Once you get over the eerily dim lighting, it's a great place to relax or chat with friends. Plenty of common space, good kitchen, within walking distance of most sites. My favourite thing about Iceland is the swimming pools, all geothermal. Sundhöll swimming pool is just a few blocks away, and it's good, but Laugardalslaug is bigger and better, and of course Blue Lagoon is the best. City pools are just 550 kr (BL is 10x that).
