I would highly recommend the Kamesei Ryokan. It is a truly unique and authentic Japanese experience. Tyler was super helpful and picked us up from the train station and brought us back in town whenever we needed. He sat us down and served us tea the first night we were there and told us about the best places to see in the area. I tried the traditional Japanese meal one night and it was amazing! (if you like fish...) I hope to return next time Im in Japan! Read Owner Comments

A very characterful town, it was the efforts of Tyler-san our host in taking us around and his first hand advice of trips to do in Nagano pref. which will make this stay stand out in our memories.
With the day trip opportunities available we would be very happy to make this ryokan our base for a longer stay in the area in future. The mountain climate and indoor and outdoor onsen were the icing on the cake. Read Owner Comments

VERY NICE RyOKAN, AMAZING STAFF, BEAUTIFUL OUTDOOR HOT SPRING, BEAUTIFUL LOCATION but 20 minutes from Nagano! We were surprise that this hostel is not in Nagano. You have to take a train that is not a JR (you can not use the pass) and then you have to take a taxi. Having said that the owner will pick you up for free if you can organize that before and is a nice solution. Read Owner Comments

We had a great time at Kamesai Ryokan, proprietor Tyler-san made us very welcome. They have on-site onsen and offer Japanese breakfasts and dinners (a little too Japanese for us, in fairness, but of a high standard nonetheless). I would recommend this ryokan to anyone wanting to stay in a village setting, Tyler-san is an active member of the local community and as such you may get invited to a local event, we were lucky enough to be and it was the highlight of our trip. I was very pleased with my stay! Keep in mind that the majority of customers are not foreign but in fact Japanese. But having been in Japan for 3.5 years, I felt right at home. I enjoyed the hot natural spring bath, the delicious food, the spacious room, and the night tour up to Mt. Obasute. Tyler and his wife were very kind and chatting with them was a pleasant experience. Thank you! Read Owner Comments
