Overall the facilities were clean and in good condition. There were a couple of issues with the state of repair in the private room A2 I stayed in. The ceiling fan was hanging by a single screw. It looked as though someone had tried to swing on it or something. One of the windows had a broken frame which left an open, unscreened gap. The staff was friendly and the bed was comfortable.

I only stayed at Koa Wood Hale so I could catch a flight the next morning. The staff and guests seemed nice and there was a good chilled vibe. As I didn't stay long I can't pass too much judgement, but the cockroaches weren't much fun.

Possible bed bugs... The floor under the shower may have rotted away from a crack in the shower floor. At some point someone may fall through. Daniel was a great guy. The manager of Koa wood doesn't do anything and the property reflects this.

If you're still hesitating to stay at Koa Wood Hale, you shouldn't for at least 2 reasons: 1) it's the only hostel in downtown Kona 2) the staff is just unbelievable! James and Co - Thanks for a great reception and a party! You rock! Take care, Slawek

Friendly staff, great location. However the bunk beds are really bad. If you are used to 10inch foam mattress the Marriott is down the street. I think if tey got slightly better beds the value would be greater. Overall good hostel

Limited hours for check in (don't arrive between noon and 5pm) Extremely flat and thin foam pads on metal bar bunk beds, get there early to get one of the only comfortable mattresses. Walking distance to everything. Loud family/neighbors that gave us the stink-eye each time we walked by, had the impression there is an easy truce between the hostel and the neighborhood. Cannot use shoes inside hostel, so people track in dirt and dust from outside. Only one bathroom, shower kinda gross.

The location was great, staff friendly with a welcoming atmosphere. My only complaint would be that the bed has stains, which I know is a normal part of wear and tear. Except I don't want to see it and I'm not sure how the beds are sanitized. I think i'd feel better if the sheets were already on the bed and even better a protective plastic covering the mattress and pillow. The sheets I used were clean and comfortable, the water was hot and it had a spacious deck with a hammock.

very nice place but some extremely thin matrasses in the dorm, iron bars are missing in the bunks, then they put a camping mat over it to solve the problem, extremely uncomfortable, thumbs up for the place, thumbs down all the way for the dorm beds, fix this!

One bathroom is just not enough. The Beds a No Go, and the windows could have curtains.

The staff were friendly, atmosphere nice. The beds were Horrible! We haven't had so little sleep in a night due to discomfort in a long time. Apparently the mattresses were discarded due to bedbugs but replaced with camping cushions, my bunk had metal bars missing so a chunk of plywood was laid over the hole the edge of which dug into my ribs all night long. Also one bathroom shared among 10 plus people? And who's the guy crashed on the couch? Local couch surfer dude?

We were pleasantly surprised! In short, this was a dive, but a great little dive. We knew why we were signing up for, and we were completely happy. Clean, convenient, cheap, and friendly.

Very dirty, staff didn't seem to care to clean up. There were cockroaches and insects everywhere in the kitchen areas and the bathrooms were gross. The atmosphere was fun though, and there were a lot of cool people staying there. The location is a little far from the coast/beach area but there aren't too many other options for the Kailua-Kona area. It was an acceptable hostel but I wish it had been cleaner.

This is the place for hippy. It is pretty dirty, noisy, etc. If it is ok for you - welcome. If no - try to find another housing...

There was one toilet and shower for 2 dorms of 10 people plus all of the people who stayed long term. These long term people slept on the couch, anywhere including the bed that other people were supposed to stay in. It really felt like we were intruding on their space. I didn't enjoy staying at Koa Wood at all.
