The value for your money is good, but the showers and toilet weren't really clean, the beds were really noisy when someone moved.

This place is a dump. When I checked in, the man was very unfriendly. He was not interested in helping. The woman was okay. The AC in our room was not working on both nights, and other guests said it was broken even longer. Some of the other rooms ac worked. They charged a 1000 baht deposit, or required a passport. They make excuses for problems and do not take ownership to fix things. Go elsewhere, there is a nice new hostel two minutes from here or a dozen local places on the way.

Thanks for your review, I'm happy to report that the AC in the dorm you were staying in has finally been fixed after many times of calling out the engineer and them not fixing the problem but instead changing parts which they thought were the problem. You must have been staying in dorm 3 as that is the only dorm which was experiencing a problem, which did seem to only happen after a power cut. The engineer claimed for a while it was because the AC was being left on constantly and not being turned off when the guests were not in the room. I do apologise if you felt the reception staff was unfriendly when you checked in, this does sound very out of character, not sure what the problem was there to be honest. Yes we do have a key deposit of either 1,000 baht or a passport to ensure that people do make an effort to not lose their keys, as we don't want to have to keep replacing locks and keys, which is obviously annoying and becomes costly. The deposit is of course returned when you check out and return your key, or it can be used against the cost of your stay. If you let us know what your problems are whilst you are here then we can try to address them as best we can, however if you don't let us know then there isn't a great deal that we can do. Yes there are many places to stay here on Koh Tao so please feel free to check them out before coming to stay.

This place sucked. And here's why: 1. Dismissive staff, until suddenly they want to chill and do a jam session. Otherwise, they could care less. 2. Filthy rooms and bathrooms. Ever heard of handsoap in the bathroom? 3. Beds are disgusting and creaky (as everyone has mentioned). Bed and pillow have a plastic sheet over it, and they give you cotton sheets to throw over it. You want a blanket? Oh, oops, you have to rent one. You want a towel? Oh, sorry, that's for rent too. Total b.s.

Thanks for your comments and I'm sorry the staff were too attentive for you, but I don't think I will ask them to care less as you request as that seems like a foolish request. I do also apologise if the bathrooms when you used them were not clean as they are only cleaned 3 to 4 time each and the rooms are only cleaned once a day in the afternoons between 1 & 2pm. The rest of the time the bathrooms and rooms do get dirty as customers use them. We do also notice that some customers like yourself ignore the simple request to remove their shoes and not walk sand and dirt through the hostel. I don't quite understand how a bed with a plastic mattress protector makes a bed disgusting, as the whole point of a mattress and pillowcase protector is to increase the hygiene of the bed, ie easy to clean the bed sheets (which are fitted bed sheets not throw overs) which are removed and washed after each visitor. If a customer has an 'accident' it does also mean that we can clean the bed properly. They are also an effective way to prevent things like dust mites and bed bugs as unfortunately these do hitch a ride on their human hosts between accommodation, the plastic mattress and pillow protectors have ensured that we have never had a issue with these. Yes we do rent out blankets and towels as not everyone wants them or needs them as people often have their own and so by just renting out these items to people who need them to cover the laundry costs it ensures that the bed rental costs are kept down. There is a new hostel (also on hostelworld) that has just opened up along the beach from us where you do get a free towel and linen included in the nightly rental price, however the rate is a little higher than here, a little over double the price. The option is yours rent a towel and change it after you take it to the beach for 20 baht a day or get a free one for an additional 300 baht a night, so not really total b.s.

Great location and clean bathrooms. Rooms are a little uncomfortable though. Staff is very friendly.

We stayed 2 nights in this backpacker dormitory. The room was like a dormitory, small and without intimity but mattresses were good and the place is quiet. Very good locatioon near beach and town. Nice staff.

Not bad hostel, air con in room wasnt great but there were fans too. Very basic but functional, sweaky beds! Good location not far from anything. There is a better hostel not far away - ask for Good Dream - nice modern rooms, good air con and good atmosphere!

Brilliant place to stay. Super social, pool and flying trapeze right outside, on the main strip, super cheap, brilliant air-con and lockers. The bathroom situation is a bit shabby and it's flipping hot there as there are no fans and the only fridge is broken... but other than that, I'd recommend it to anyone.

The only real redeeming factors were location and value for money (maybe a little security?). The \"pool\" advertised is the local dive shop\'s pool. The bathrooms were dirty half the time. The wireless internet didn\'t exist. The airconditioners were broken (in several room) - ie slept pretty sweaty. The bunks in the room next door literally snapped in half while the occupants were out...that room in particular had to be torn down for repairs. I spent as little time as possible in the room.....

Thanks for your comments, yes the swimming pool is owned by Davy Jones Locker (DJL) Diving which I am actually the manager of and as there is an arrangement between the dive school and the hostel for discounts on diving courses between the hostel and the dive school we use the common area of the pool & bar/restaurant for the hostel, as it would be foolish to build another swimming pool as we already have an existing one 25m from the hostel entrance. You were unfortunate that you stayed at a time when the Internet provider TOT was experiencing problems with it's servers on the mainland, this was something beyond our control sorry. As soon as TOT had fixed their server issues the WiFi was up and running again. The issue that we had with an AC unit in one of the rooms was fixed the following day and all the AC units in each room were also fully serviced. Not sure what you are referring to regarding bunks snapping in half, I think that you are maybe a little misinformed there and are actually referring to a repair that was done to a section of the ceiling rendering in one of the dorms where part of the skimming work had cracked and come away from the roof (actually we think this happened due to the rendering contracting so much compared to the main roof due to the rooms being so cold inside compared to the outside roof temperature). Alternative accommodation was offered to the 4 customers this could potentially effect (during the very busy period of the month directly after the Full Moon Party), only one customer actually took up this offer the rest chose to stay in the effected room and then when we could make the room vacant for repairs a few days later the repair was made to the ceiling and now it is as good as new. I'm guessing that the bathrooms may have gotten dirty in between when they were cleaned as they are only cleaned 4 times a day as we do not keep the cleaners on standby to go in and clean up after each customer, sorry.

The hostel is situated in pretty much perfect spot, but that's about it. The rooms are unkept, the sheets are smelly and the worse part of it all are the bathrooms - if in this case you can even call them bathrooms. The staff is unfriendly and we were glad we spent only one night in there as more would be a nightmare.

Owner Comment (Show)
Firstly thanks for your comments and we are sorry we couldn't extend your booking, but as was explained to you at the time we were fully booked and you had only booked in the one night before arriving. As for your other comments, the rooms are cleaned once a day between 1 & 2pm, we can only clean up what we are sure aren't people's belongings, ie the empty bottles and rubbish in the bins etc. Your sheets that you were given as you checked in were freshly washed when we gave them to you, all sheets, blankets and towels are laundered after every customer, if customers stay a few days then they can come to the reception to change their sheets when they like and towels can be changed every day. You're right we don't call them bathrooms as that would be incorrect as we don't have any bath's here just toilets, shower rooms and wash basins. As I understand it you were politely asked to remove your shoes before entering the hostel so as not to trail sand all through the hostel, to which your flat response was "No" even when the reception staff offered you the use of their indoor flip flops. As you apparently suffered from a Howard Hughes type of condition where you feared the bacteria from the floor would enter your body through the skin on your feet. So yes I agree the staff are extremely unfriendly, as why should you have to comply with a reasonable request to take your shoes off and not walk sand through the hostel and then be even meaner to you by offering you their own indoor shoes to wear in the hostel as you had a condition that made you paranoid about bacteria on the floor. They're so unfriendly, I bet in your country they'd be arrested for such crimes. Again I do apologise that you were only able to stay the one night and couldn't fulfill your request to extend your stay as I suppose that could be seen as being unfriendly also, however in our defence we were fully booked. Good luck with the rest of your trip and watch out for those nasty bacteria :)

Cleanliness was not a high priority for this hostel: each guest removed their own sheets & pillow case, with the next guest being given their sheets by reception, without even a look to determine if garbage was removed by previous guest. There was sand everywhere, including on the plastic mattress covers (not a personal favourite of mine). The showers were a dribble, it took ~ 3 mins just to wet my hair. Overall, not a good experience, albeit that the WiFi was handy.

Thanks for your comments, usually the rooms aren't cleaned as each customer checks out as we feel that may be a little annoying for customers not checking out in the mornings, so instead each room is cleaned in the afternoon from 1pm to allow those with hangovers from the night before a bit more recovery time :) It is also difficult to determine what is garbage and what isn't with some customers belongings and so we remove empty bottles and food packaging and also the contents of the rubbish bins from each room when they are cleaned. We do ask people to remove their shoes when then come into the hostel to try and reduce the amount of sand that they bring into the hostel with them, however sometimes when people come in after a night out down at the beach bars they do forget to clean themselves before going to bed and bring sand into their beds with them. Rest assured we don't put sand in the hostel or the beds we just just try to remove as much of it as we can ;)

The hostel is located within walking distance to the beach, which is nice. There are plenty of restraunts and bakerys nearby so finding food is not a problem. Overall it is what you would expect for a 300 baht dorm bed. The A/C does work well.

Really good for meeting people and socialising. Everyone was friendly and wanted to go out together which was ideal for us. Friendly staff at all times. Take your own toilet paper as they put out new rolls each morning, but once it’s gone, it’s gone. We stayed in an 8 bed mixed room, two of us by air con were fine, but the other one of us by the door found it too hot as the air didn’t circulate the room. So pick your bed wisely. Great location, 3 mins from beach, bars and restaurants

The issue I had was the beds. uncomfortable and squeky.. sure there's a sign that says if your bed squeaks then go see reception and they'll fix it.. banging the rickity metal poles into place doesn't fix it, you need new beds.
