Helder was very welcoming. All the surfers & guests were friendly and helpful. It was a lovely informal atmosphere, for chatting, eating or cooking. The view of the ocean and the stars from the terrace is nice. I'm over 50 and love trekking, but if I was back in my 20's, on Madeira backpacking without a tent or wanted to learn to surf, this would feel like the right place to stay for a few days or weeks. Porto da Cruz is a small town with eateries, bar and supermarket within 2 min easy walks.
