Good kitchen and most of the rooms in the calm patio with air-conditioning. Good lockers and friendly, helpful staff. Only one computer/internet access for all people. Way too loud music in the evening, no relaxing atmosphere for this... But during the afternoon its much more silent and relaxing in the unbelievable cozy and hugh, nice living room!

We stayed for 4 nights and it was a great hostel over all. The staff were really friendly and helpful. However they do offer more space for people to stay on matresses in the lounge, which means that the number of people staying can be upto about 15 or so more, with no extra toilets. They have an oven, but it doesn't work only the elements on the top - so dont by pizzas. Vivieane was really helpful. And they keep the place very clean.

Although the bedrooms and bathroom could use a little paint, Makako is clean, fun, run by very friendly people, and in a great location. My friend and I though this was one of the best hostels in terms of atmosphere because of the sense of community you can find in the main lounge area. Really easy to make new friends. Overall, definitely will choose Makako in Cartagena again!

Staff are excellent, very friendly and the location is great. There's a big kitchen if you like to cook. Free coffee in the morning and lemonade in the afternoon. Had a late flight but they let me store my luggage, use the showers, common area, etc after I had checked out.

Great location, good common area, but the 10 bed dorm and its bathroom could do with a bit of work

I enjoyed Makako Hostel. It's inside the old town, the Ciudad Amurallada, which is great. The common area is nice, with a big living room, balcony, kitchen. Rooms were fine, air conditioning alowed only during the night, witch was not that good, 'cause it's really hot in Cartagena during december. Staff were ok, but we kind of felt they were trying to sell us tour packages with personal interest... It really is a great hostel, but I can't assure it was the best!

This was one of the most enjoyable stays I have ever had. The location and atmosphere were wonderful. Most importantly, the staff was remarkable. They were some of the most friendly, helpful, courteous, and enjoyable people I have ever been around. All of them worked extremely hard to make our stay a perfect one. Specifically, Gabriel, Costanza, Yina, and Vicenta each personally added to our enjoyment of Cartagena. We even got to watch the Packer game. We can't thank them enough!.

This hostel was great. There was free lemonade in the afternoons and the staff were lovely. Make sure you use the lockers for passports provided, as while we were there were issues with theft when people didn't use them.

Overall a sub-standard hostel. Argumentative, unhelpful staff. Don't be misled by the photos - the dorms are very small with very little space to move. Certainly initially affected my stay in Cartagena until I moved to a different and much nicer hostel. Would not recommend.

Makako was an excellent hostel. I stayed in both a private room and a dorm during my stay. The staff could not be nicer - they ask you in the mornings if you'd like coffee and lemonade throughout the day to keep cool. Gabriel, the young man at reception was a joy. Every single one of his recommendations (food/tour/times and locations to swim and see the sunset) were 100% spot on. I really enjoyed the location - just 1 block from a supermarket and 3 blocks from the main square. Awesome.
