Loved it. This was pretty much my first time staying at a hostel so I was a little worried. But free wifi and free pancakes with homemade syrup..what's not to love? The staff is friendly and they have free lockers to store valuables

In our experience almost every hostel you stay at makes some claim to be "run by travellers, for travellers." Mamallena is one of the rare hostels where this is actually true. Stuart and his team truly went above and beyond the call of duty for us - booking places on the incredible santana catamaran through the san blas islands to Cartagena via email before we arrived in panama, picking us up from the airport, and providing excellent advice for activities in panama city. Good hostel too

Basically a great place, secure, in the part of the city where there's local people (out of the big hotels and tourist area). You can go everywhere by Taxi (really cheap) or by bus (if you want to try that) and it's near Casco Viejo (1 of the few things to see in Panama city). We had some issues doing the pancakes (the frying pans were really old and stuck a lot!) But an australian guy which was there to help the hostel decided to buy a couple of new frying pans!! Problem resolved!

Staying at Mamallena reminded me why I love staying in hostels. The unique atmosphere of the place made it really special and a neat hang out. They had everything from water and beer for sale to good pancakes for free, any time of the day. Unfortunately, the area of Perejil is sketchy and there are much, much better neighborhoods of Panama City to stay and I wish that Mamallena was in one of those better neighborhoods. Overall though, it's very good and would recommend.

no complaints here. this is a hostel and has the feel of it. the owner is on site i don't now how much but i did meet him when i was there, they have a washer and dryer for guest to us 1.50 wash 1.50 dry thats real reasonably for a hostel. this is a rather big hostel always seemed to be people about at all hours so you won't be lonely if you wake up in the middle of the night the tv in the lobby is on 24/7. Security good my door locked I never worried about leaving things in my room.

Mamallena Backpackers in Panama City is comfortable and enjoyable. Many attractions are within easy walking distance. Common areas promote social activity, and I met many interesting people. This is one of the cleanest hostels I have stayed in, thanks to the hard working staff, who are helpful, informative, excellent communicators, and a pleasure to deal with. I recommend both the San Blas Camping and Home Stay Tour (snorkeling out of this world!) and the Panama City Tour (do this first!).

Very good hostel near centre of town. Make your own pancakes for breakfast are delicious! There are booklets which the owner has put together with lots of information on how to get to places, local restaurants etc which are very useful. Good common areas with cheap beers etc available. Staff very friendly and helpful (thanks alot for your help with our lost luggage!) Would definately recommend. Airport pickup also very easy and convenient.
