Upon arrival at this filthy hostel we found guests who had been waiting over 40 minutes for the included breakfast having failed to rouse the staff. After much knocking, whistling and shouting we managed to rouse the duty staff member, only to have our "Good Morning" met with "This is my nighttime!" She then treated us to an impressive display of mumbled curses (several of our group speak Portuguese) and general hostility before telling us to come back in 4 hours - we left in disgust.

We arrived on time in the morning and told us to wait until 2 pm to check in. When we came back another employee had given our rooms to other people. They found us place in another room for only a few and for the rest of us in another house nearby but in a worse place. They charged us the same price. The staff was really mean and bad tempered. The toilets were really dirty and always wet. The location seems nice during the day but really insecure at night.

We made a booking for a double room back in November for the peak season period. The hostel took 50% of the fee (as per the t´s and c´s) 2 weeks before we were due to arriuve. An hour later we received an email stating that they could no longer accommdate us in the double room but they´d found a solution, we could go in a dorm. By this time everything on the island was booked so we had to accept the dorm. Room was tiny, extremely hot and the receptionist was useless (8am b´fast served at 9am)

We have booked and payed in advance a room with bathroom. They gave us a room WITHOUT bathroom saying that the shared bathroom will be used only by us (because the other rooms have private bathroom). This was a lie, the bathroom was used by 10 people (male and female). Kitchen is small and it closes and 10:30 pm. There is only one computer for internet and it is not always available because it is the personal notebook of the girl in charged of the hotel. It is located far away from the sea.

some people i met liked it there, i didn´t like it...didn´t feel very comfortable! the price is too high for what u get! the owner doesn´t speak english, so it was quite hard to tell her something... the pool was yuck! the only good thing was the big buffet-breakfast!

My stay at Mata Virgem was very bad. The staff was really unstable, the bedsheet was filthy and the bathroom was terribly dirty. It is also too expencive in contrast to other posadas on Isla Grande. One morning the staff didn´t bother to make breakfast. I can understand why, since the woman that runs the hostel was up all night arguing with her boyfriend infront of all the hostelguest. She throw a glass in the ground and my friend unfortunately stamped on it.. Not stay here!!!

Friendly staff, nice breakfast and clean rooms and bathroom. Not a very social place to meet other backpackers though, but I can recommend it to those who wants a quiet place in Vila do Abrao .

We stayed over new year so the prices, already a little high, were hiked up again.

This was by far the worst hostel I have stayed out of my 3 month trip in South America. The staff member was so rude and un helpful she didnt know a word of english and rolled her eyes everytime we asked her for something. The facilities werent working the internet was down, the pool was empty. Please do yourself a favour and do not stay here.
