Great if you have a car, but annoyongly out the way if not. Owners are brilliant and really helped where they could. The resident kangaroo is awesome too.

We were in one of the cabins. Fantastic to have our own fridge and setting was perfect.

Our stay here was really great! The small cottages are situated in the wood and chicken are running around everywhere. The walk to the beach is not very long. The people living and working here are so nice. We had a quiet and relaxed time as the hostel was not crowded. The highlight is Josy the cangoroo also living on the area. You are so close to nature itsalmost like paradise.

We camped at this place but you still get access to the all the gas bbqs kitchens, lounge, etc making life so easy here. A great place and would recommend to anyone heading toward Port Stephens.

Very, very nice place! The staff was very friendly, and the property fantastic. Lots of wildlife, and there is even a hand fed kangaroo on the land.

The cabin was very basic, containing a couple of bunk beds, a fridge with a broken control and a pedestal fan. The key didn't fit the door lock properly and the verandah door was broken too so I was a little concerned about leaving my laptop inside. Kitchen facilities, showers and toilets were not clean. There were no flyscreens on the windows, so I got bitten by mosquitos at night. Hotels in Newcastle were higher quality and better facilities for the same price. It was near a nice beach though.

Melaleuca is such a nice place, with such a great vibe. Very clean overall, apart from the men's bathroom but it was not the hostel's fault. This is one of those places you just don't wanna leave. They also even have a kangaroo on-site, Josephine, whom is very friendly.

The owner tried to charged us extra 7 dolars just for spending 15 minutes more after the check out. Lack of backpackers spirit man!

Owner Comment (Hide)
"Lack of spirit" happens when you are to check out at 10.30am and come back to the kitchens (after everything has been cleaned) at 2pm to make yourself some food. If you were really travelling around you will find a $7 day fee is quite cheap.

The mattress werent in a good condition. The bedrooms havent got lockers, even locker in the door. There was big mess of beers ate the room, the owner has seen it at the moment of check in and havent done anything about that. I saw a cockroach in the bedroom. The bathrooms werent clean. There was cobwebs (lots) in all this place. Barbecue area doesnt have a good luminosity for a barbecue, many people were using mobiles to iluminate the area. Definitely wasnt a good investment.

Such a shame you didn't let anyone know of your concerns when you were here Ricardo, we do remember you guys - you were the ones that came in on the last day of the long weekend (Everyone else had been in for the 3 day minimum stay) and thought you had booked a private room, when you had really booked a 6 share room. We understand that we are not to everybody's liking, but we too saw the neatly stacked boxes of boutique beer from the local brewery that your room mates had visited, and we had no concern as we thought they were being really tidy. Sorry for the misunderstanding, but we are not in the business of serviced rooms, we are a backpacker hostel, and it is very hard to make a 6 share room look empty when there are 4 other guests inside. Perhaps next time you might make comment to the hostel when you are there and you may have a better outcome.

Amazing hostel! The "staff" were very friendly and helpful, personally showing me around and taking me to my cabin. It's on a nature reserve, so there are domesticated birds and a kangaroo hanging around the grounds. Big communal area with a full service kitchen, games, books, etc. Best hostel i've ever stayed in.

The owners were very friendly. They told us the good spots in Port Stephens and offered their "bus service" to us. The surrounding of the hostel was beautiful! And Josephine, the kangaroo, is super cute! It was very nice we were here off-season because we had the whole place to ourselves (and 3 other backpackers), so it was really quit and calm.

The setting is lovely, (removable) windows on the shutters to make an overnight in winter a bit more bearable would be nice. Instead of a fridge in the cabin (why? you can't cook or make a cuppa in the room) a mirrored wardrobe or hanging rail for coats/wet weather gear would be handy. Would be nice to go back in summer but not sure the showers would be able to cope, I assume the addition of a shower block is being planned.

I had a great stay in this hostel. Mike the owner gave us a fantastic overview of the area and recommendations of places to go and personally took us to our room. The environment is fantastic and if you don't plan on going out for the evening there are magazines and boardgames to keep yourself occupied. Lots of BBQ's to use. Would highly recommend.

Three mates and I stayed at Meluca for four nights. We had and excellent time. The location is really good, across the road from a lovely surf beach. And the setting is great - surrounded by Australian bush. The owner, Pete, is a really lovely and helpful bloke who makes the stay all that more enjoyable. This is a great value for money location. I would really recommend staying here.

The hotel was excellent. They even have fridge inside the room! the only downside is that the kitchen is not very clean... although in my experience that is a Australian-wide problem.
