The only really good thing about here is the location and breakfast. Facilities massively need to be better maintained for the price we're paying e.g. broken toilets, shower curtains falling off the rails, annoying dorm rooms that you need to go to get a key every time someone closes the door. Location and slightly better deals on tours seem to outweigh the negatives. One very old PC available for internet use.
The location of this hostel is excellent. It was also the best free breakfast of our 3 week trip in Peru. As other reviewers have said, it can be quite noisy with people coming in and out at all hours of the night so bring earplugs. Showers are hot and have good water pressure.
Nice hostel although 10 bed gets the noise from street outside. Staff walked me to corner to get a taxi very early in the morning which was nice.
Do not reserve a room in the 10-bed-dorm! It faces the main road and it's really hard to sleep due to the noise. There are parties in this street and you're gonna feel like you try to sleep in a club. The other dorms should be fine though.
Best thing about this hostel is probably the location- really close to the main square. 6 bed room was nice with lockers, Chargers at beds and curtains around each bed. Showers weren't great either freezing cold or boiling hot on some days. Not much of an atmosphere in the hostel. Did book the 2 day Colca canyon tour with them which was a good price and really well organised!
Our 7 bed dorm was very bright as all 3 windows had no curtains and the sunrise hit our room first thing (our dorm did not have privacy curtains on the bunks as advertised, there was only 1 dorm that did). Staff were friendly and helpful, breakfast was good and the terrace was a nice place to relax in the sun. In regards to meeting people, it is what you make it. Showers were hit and miss on hot water but clean.
The staff were all very friendly. Breakfast was delicious and value for money was good.
The Guide Jose who took us to Colca Canyon was awesome!

Fairly basic in terms of facilities, but apart from that we loved this hostel. Very friendly, with a homely atmosphere, and in an almost perfect location for exploring the city. The excellent free breakfast and rooftop terrace are big bonuses as well.
Mercaderes Backpackers is located less than a block from Arequipa's Plaza de Armas. It was a bit difficult to locate (small sign) but super convenient. You have to ring the bell to enter and the staff has to buzz you in. The rooftop patio area was cute, and the breakfast was great- best bread I've had in Peru (baguette-like roll). Very clean and met some lovely people along the way.
Pancake breakfast is delicious! Great location and friendly staff, with good views from the roof terrace. Kitchen facilities could do with an upgrade. Had a forgetful couple of days and managed to leave my kindle in the dorm after checking out. Thankfully this was handed in by the cleaner and I was able to collect it on our return to Arequipa after I had almost given up hope.
Great place and very helpful staff. Some of the rooms have no windows but the roof top is frantastic with great views
Great hostel! Located right in the town center. So really close to everything. The staff was very helpful in helping me arrange my bus out of areqipa. I stayed in the six person room and the beds all had curtains around the beds so privacy was really nice. Great breakfast! I recommed it!
Good: location is great, right in the centre. Rooms are warms, beds are fairly comfy. lockers for stuff, breakfast is tasty. Organised Colca trek through the hostel and it was great. Bad: Showers are terrible, never hot, barely warm.
Ideally located off of Arequipa's main square, this hostel is basic but does feature an attractive terrace boasting views of the mountains. The hostel can be loud as it features a bar, but will otherwise do as a base for exploring town.
Really great location, right beside the cathedral. The breakfast was much better than expected! Eggs and banana pancakes.! The rooms were clean, but the bathrooms could use a little TLC. Overall, good hostel in a great location.
Really enjoyed our stay at the hostel, staff were friendly and the breakfast pancake made for a nice change. The rooftop has a beautiful view of the city but is a little underused. There isn´t much of an atmosphere and the showers were inconsistant. However, great location and shared front room, highly reccommended.
Great hostel for cheap cost. Given that, the lockers don't fit backpacks and there aren't keys to the rooms. I'd highly recommend staying in a 6 person room over a 12 person room as the beds in the 6-person are MUCH nicer!! Great location.
The hostel it was great, just cold shower...
