It seemed like Fugakuso was a large Japanese style house that the family turned into a budget ryokan. It has tatami floors and futons, but it was more a do-it-yourself ryokan experience. The staff was VERY helpful. Fugakuso is a 20 min walk from Kawaguchiko station but the owner came in his car to pick us up. He spoke a little English so that was good. When we got to our room, there were all kinds of maps of the area and a discount ticket for a nearby onsen, since Fugakuso doesn't have its own.

We had a absolutely lovely time. The rooms are simple Japanese-style, and in the evenings it can get cold, but you\'re given a space heater and warm kimonos. Most rooms have a view of Mt. Fuji and the lake is a short walk. The offerings are modest, but the hospitality more than makes up for it. The host and owner drove us to the train station (it\'s a short cab ride if you need to make it on your own). He was incredibly friendly and helpful. Would love to return!
