The place is clean and comfortable in general. A few things could have been improved though: 1) too many mosquitoes at night - would be nice if they have some sorts of proper mosquito repellant 2) other folks in the room chatted late into the night and early in the morning - hmm... what are the quiet hours? 3) somehow the living room atmosphere was not super conducive for socializing. A lot of people kept to their own groups and felt a little anti-social. I did meet some new friends though.
Staff weren't very friendly or helpful, they didn't really talk to us or greet us warmly. The other guests were quite cold towards us too (we were two western guys and the other guests were predominantly Taiwanese and Chinese). The hostel was extremely humid even when the weather was comfortable outside. The main living area had a lot of mosquitoes. Top floor dorm is too bright. The bathrooms were wet everywhere and weren't cleaned properly. No slippers were provided for the bathrooms.
A hostel as it should be! Pretty new and clean place with a big chill-out area, good kitchen, helpful staff, nice beds and bathrooms. The walk there feels a bit longer than 15 minutes, however, it's already half way to downtown Hualien, so definitely a good location if you want to check out the city (which you should!). Highly recommended.
