Awesome week staying at mount back packers. location is the best you will get, directly opposite the best bar in the mount and 2 mins walk to main beach. friendly staff etc etc. would recommend.
While it's true most of the time that you get what you pay for, Mount Backpackers does offer really good value for your money. The location is really perfect right at the heart of what seemed like the Maunganui night life. Facilities are fairly decent though the big forms did feel a little cramped when full. The staff are really pleasant. Of course, a lot of things like security and cleanliness also depend on the people you end up with.

Stayed three nights, didn't really like it. The dorm was the most cramped I've ever seen, and the floors look like they are rarely vacuumed. The big issue for me was the dining area and kitchen. The kitchen is tiny, with only one stove and a lack of dishwashing equipment. The dining area is outdoors and unless you like second-hand smoke with your food, it is very unpleasant. Common area is very small. Free wifi and towel were a bonus, location is great. Wouldn't stay again.
Was thoroughly happy with my stay at Mount Backpackers, step out the front door and have a great variety of food joints all around, beach is a 2min walk and the surf hire was a great price compared to everywhere else. Stu who was running the place was extremely friendly and helpful. Definately will be returning here in future with a crew! :)
The location is excellent and the staff are friendly. However, as a traveller, rarely have I felt as unwelcome as I did at this hostel. It has mostly long term workers, who have no interest in meeting new people. Also, it is very small and crowded. I think there are better options.
Great hostel to be close to mt maunganoui beach, it's lovely!! On a road with loads of shops / restaurants but pretty chilled not much nightlife. The hostel is pretty sociable loads of people drink in the courtyard at night, but many people live there working so its not as good to meet people that may be travelling around if that's what your looking for! Can be quite noisy at night if you want an early one... Good free wifi :)
