This hostel's best characteristic is its personality! I loved staying there and quickly found many new friends to talk with and plan adventures with. It is a place more like home than a far away, uncomfortable place to sleep.
This is by far the best hostel I have stayed in because if the magnificent location, excellent staff, and superb social environment! The mountain hostel is the perfect jumping off point for any of the activities in the Berner Oberland and a great place to share stories over beer and food at the end of the day. The only improvement would be small lockers for valubles as anyone can come into the hostel though it is tucked away from others not going to Gimmelwald explicitly. I will stay here again
Gimmelwald is without a doubt one of the most amazing places we've ever been too. This hostel has the best position in town, with absolutely amazing views. The staff here were equally amazing and helpful. It has a great kitchen and common area, and even has it's own bar/restaurant. Only drawbacks are the 9:30-11:30am lockout, which made getting ready in the morning a rush (and sleeping in impossible), as well as the sleeping situation which was basically one large, joined bed which was strange.
The mountain hostel is ideally located for doing some great hikes around the lauterbrunnen area. Gimmewald was a quiet and peaceful place to spend time. The hostel itself felt like a true hostel experience with most people cooking their own meals and spending time in the common areas chatting with other travelers. I do recommend bringing your own food to cook as the restaurant prices are a bit steep for the average backpacker. I would highly recommend staying here.
Only stayed there for one night. Not bad if you are looking for cheap accommodation up in the mountains. On the other than..the flies. I don't usually mind flies, but having them buzz around near your ear when you're sleeping or waking up to them on your face is somewhat disconcerting. Besides that, not a bad place. I met some pretty cool people there and it is in a convenient location for some good hikes in the area.

Pros: can't beat this location. Also, the hostel is so small you are forced to interact with everyone, which made for an awesome atmosphere to meet people. But.. Cons: There are no lockers at all to hold your stuff, literally everyone's bags were strewn about. There are flies everywhere, especially in the kitchen. Reception was generally rude, we weren't the only ones that noticed. They have a "cleaning lockout" from 9:30am-11am which is terrible b/c people are checking out, done with breakfast
We ouldn't have had a better stay. The staff was very responsive, all of our needs were met and the location was beautiful. Thank you for making our honeymoon truly memorable!

After staying at 25+ hostels across Europe, this was my favorite. The location alone makes it a must-see. I highly recommend it to younger backpackers It is in the mountains, with lots of hiking trails around it. It sits on the edge of the mountain, right next to the cable car (necessary to get up to the town of Gimmelwald). It is best to bring cooking supplies (they have a good kitchen) because food is limited in the small town. Breakfast is awesome, but there are lots of flies everywhere
Great hostel in a great location. A few items to note though. No lockers in the rooms, but i never had a problem with anything missing. The flies will wake you up first thing in the morning, but that is just part of being in Gimmelwald. This hostel used to be very filled with life, but the pension next door has stolen some of its evening time thunder. That being said, good pizza and beer. Cost is inline with Switzerland, which means expensive, but cheaper than a hotel room though.
This mountain hostel may have one of the best views if Europe. What fun to wake up and see the Jungfrau out of the window! Staff are very friendly and helpful. Very clean.

The place ist't one of the easiest to reach but it's really worth the effort! The place is really cozy and small enough and the staff is really nice and helpful. A few things you may want to know: the showers cost extra and there are no locks in dorm room doors. Just loved the location and the armosphere and would stay there again.
This hostel makes Gimmelwald a fantastic base to explore the mountains. Facility is fantastic, fresh and clean; kitchen is very handy. Best of all is the many many social rooms of different area, indoors and outdoors. Mountain view from this hostel is breathtaking! Reception gets cold if you don't buy food from them, but it's small minors.
This hostel is pretty damn awesome! it's like staying in a hostel log cabin. With that has some pros and cons, but all around a great experience. Amazing view and location at Gimmelwald, and great atmosphere! You do have to pay to use the shower (1 Swiss Frank for 5 minutes) but other than that its great!
Had a wonderful stay at Mountain Hostel! The views are absolutely breathtaking, and the atmosphere was so peaceful. The kitchen facility was excellent for eating on a budget, with all necessary equipment and supplies. All day hikes easily accessible from this location. I loved the atmosphere in the evenings, where all the guests mingle, play cards, and chat about their travels. Definitely will stay here again!
Very friendly, great location and great savings with a nights stay. The hostel had a very nice view of the moutains and offered a wide range of great hikes.
Having to pay for the showers without knowing before hand doesn't give the best impressions to customers. Why not give one token per night per guest ?
