Really good place to stay. Very clean and would stay again. Owners were lovely and took me to and picked me up from the snow monkey park. Only a 10 minute drive from the snow monkey park.
Our stay at the Shimaya was awesome. The free ride to the Monkey Park was very convenient and they were very timely. Monkey park 100percent recommended. Mr Ichiro was very helpful. Tip: you can take a free shuttle at 9am to Ryuoo ski hill. Then pay $2500 yen (per person) for a snow bus ride to the gondola. You can ride up with the skiers, and the views at the top are amazing on a clear day. Ride down in time to catch the 11am shuttle back to Yadanaka (don't miss it!). Well worth it for pics.
The owner and his wife were incredibly helpful and went our of their way to ensure we made the most of our visit. The private outdoor onsen a short walk away was worth every penny. Mr. Yamoto dropped us off early for the monkey park and being the first to arrive was the highlight of the trip, as we had the whole park to ourselves for the first 15 minutes before the steady stream of tourists started coming in. Overall a great experience and would happily recommend.

Great place to stay and enjoy the town when seeing the snow monkeys. They pick you up from the station and also drop you off at the park recommending to walk back (worth it); stopping off at an onsen (can only enter number 9 of the Shibo onsens which costs 500 yen) and not worth it), and also the small local brewery which has sake tasting (SELF SERVICE) and nice local beers.
Nice place to stay and very close in a walking distance to Zenkoji temple. This is old fabulous house inside even it is look modern outside. I like this place. Don't forget to try to walk through the darkness underground at Zenkoji temple to find a lock of heaven. You will feel it different inside of your mind.
Shimaya's building and facilities are a little older and outdated, but we had a good time here because of the care and attention we got from the staff. The rooms are quite spacious, and the tatami beds are VERY comfortable. If you're only staying one night like we did, you will definitely regret it! Definitely go to the monkey park and the private onsen if you visit in the winter. It is worthwhile!
Hostel was great, staff provided great service as they went out of their way to help us out. Driving us to the station and to the monkey park. Very kind and genuinely nice people.

Lovely couple running the place. Mr Yamoto is really proactive in recommending you the best places to go have fun or explore. He drove myself and another couple up to the Snow Monkey Park just after we checked in, and provided boots for us as well so our shoes wouldn't get wet (you will need to have some warm, warm socks in winter). Convenient location, just a few minutes walk from Yudanaka station, convenience stores nearby as well. The shared public style bath was really warm and nice to use.
It seemed a bit pricey, but excellent service by the owner makes up for it. The owner came to pick us up at the train station (we arrived on the last train). Following day he also drove us to the enterace of the national park.
Gorgeous traditional accommodation located in a picturesque town within walking distance of the stations, restaurants and temples\shrines. The Japanese style rooms are spacious and clean and the fresh pot of green tea placed in the room everyday was a lovely touch. There is a public Onsen in the Ryokan and another private Onsen owned by the Ryokan just down the street which I highly recommend. The owners are really nice, have great English and will happily drive you to the Snow Monkies nearby.
