We had an amazing moment there, The ryokan's owner is nice, they sent us a detailed and friendly email with all the inforrnations and access we needed. The rooms are great, big and authentic( Futon and beautiful space to eat and relax). We could share our experience and upload our pictures thanks to the Wifi Access. Finally, the Ofuro is small, but comfortable. We will come back there. a good deal.

Great place! The owner of this ryokan really makes it worthy of all the stellar reviews. He will go out of the way to make your stay amazing and cost-effective. He will chaffeur you around just to help you save money on taxis and, if you want, he will basically plan out your whole itinerary. I have no idea what they will do when he retires! The breakfast and accommodation are great. The onsite onsen gets VERY hot, but you can cool it down with the cold water tap.

Shimaya is a wonderful place to stay! Ichirou-san and his wife will do anything to make you feel at home. He came and picked us up at the station, which was really nice because our luggage was heavy. He drove us to the monkey park in the morning and showed us a really great outdoor onsen with a fantastic view of the city, which we wouldn't have found ourselves. The rooms are really clean and comfortable. Nothing to complain about, our stay here was perfect!

I very much enjoyed my stay at this ryokan! The staff were extremely helpful and the owner went out of his way to drive me and my friends around to the nearby Monkey Park and excellent onsen in town and gave us many recommendations for restaurants. It was a great experience to stay here; however, I felt the place could use a little updating/renovation. I also really enjoyed having the glass bottles of coke in the room fridge - a nice, nostalgic treat!

Great hostel!! The room was very neat and tidy and the staff were excellent. The owner took us the monkey park, arranged for us to bath in a private onsen and drops us off at the train station when we checked. He also took some photos of us and sent them on via email. Absolute legend!! Would highly recommend this hostel!!

I enjoyed my stay in the single room, it was a big room with a nice balcony. It is a great experience to stay in a traditional Japanese room and sleep on tatamis. I didn't try the hotel onsen, but it looked very nice. The owners were very friendly and had many ideas and recommendations for what to do in Yudanaka area and the drove me to the snow monkeys and the outdoor onsen. Thank you!

Shimaya yudanaka was a great place to stay for an authentic Japanese experience. The tradtional room was spacious and comfortable. The owners are lovely and keen to be a part of your trip, offering lifts and advice as to which restaurants and onsen are best. You can also pay extra for a traditional Japanese breakfast (western also available) which was delicious and filling. We would definately recommend this hotel

Was an excellent and unique experience. Yumoto-san was very nice and helpful playing the role of host, chauffeur, tour-guide, restaurateur, photographer, and much more. It is a traditional ryokan, so bathrooms are communal and slippers are worn throughout the building (which was a slight problem with my size-12 feet and the one-size-fits-all slippers). There are plenty of things to do nearby and in the neighboring town of Obuse. Will definitely go there again in the future!

Fantastic views, lovely rooms. The staff go above and beyond to help you get the most out of the area and personally took us to and from the monkey site. They also let us use their hotel onsen privately and took us to an outdoor one which they booked for us on request - both lovely experiences with no hassle whatsoever. Very sad to leave!

Mr. Ichiro and his wife are incredible...the most kind and helpful people I've ever met...

We booked at the last minute, and had few expectations for the hotel, but were pleasantly surprised not just by the lovely ryokan room, but also by the lengths the owner, Yumoto-san, went to make our day a particularly memorable and relaxing one. We and the other guests were driven to the monkey park, and later to a beautiful outdoor onsen to watch the sun go down over the mountains. An unexpected delight!
