I had a lovely stay at Newport's hostel. It's centrally located near downtown and Bellevue Avenue, which made sightseeing, dining, and entertainment easy. Owner does informative night walks to introduce guests to Newport, and the Cheap Eats list provided is excellent. Supermarket is only a short walking distance, as well as the bus/trolley. The rooms have lockers and cabinets for your things, and the kitchen is well equipped for cooking. The bathrooms are pretty clean. I recommend this hostel!

Not like staying at a Hostel at all, it's basically like staying at some one's house & paying them for it. Nice owner/staff member very friendly & helpful. Washing was a big expensive & the shower wasn't that hot. But apart from that very good, exactly what I needed a cheap hostel to kill a week. Thanks

I am glad Joel felt at home during the week he stayed with us as that is one of our missions at the Newport International Hostel - to give people a taste of New England hospitality. Having stayed in hundreds of hostels around the world I have found hostels are as diverse as the world is - which is what makes hostelling so special. Some are huge and accommodate hundreds of people. At the other end of the spectrum there are "home hostels" which accommodate only a few guests - which is what the Newport Hostel is. Many of our guests tell us our cozy accommodations (in a historic home in downtown Newport) are a refreshing change.from the big city hostels of nearby Boston and New York City, In response to his comment about hot showers - at one point he told me he "figured out" the hot water for showers (I don't recall him telling me before that this was a problem). There is a sign next to the shower telling guests how to get "the perfect shower." In response to his comments about washing his clothes at the hostel being a bit expensive - the cost of water in Newport is outrageously expensive and the price just went up again. Sorry, but we need to pass some of that expense on to our guests who use the clothes washer. He didn't mention that I gave him one free wash because he stayed so long. Also he didn't mention that drying his clothes was free for him because he used our clothes line outside to hang his wash out to dry (a clothes line for guest use is often a benefit of staying at a "home hostel"). There is a Laundromat within walking distance of the hostel that is slightly cheaper. I invite anybody reading these comments to come and enjoy a taste of New England Hospitality at the Newport Hostel!

The hostess called me several times the day of check-in to see when I would get there; I felt like I had another mother. She's very nice, just socially aggressive. Good price for off-season (winter) stays, and within walking distance of the popular wharf area. She also pointed out the best things to do in town, which was invaluable.

I was grateful this guest had a cell phone and kept in touch with me as he progressed on his drive to Newport from New York City. The hostel was empty that night except for him. Communicating with him in advance enabled me to take some much-needed time off before his arrival without worrying whether or not he would be standing at the hostel door and I wouldn't be there to give him a warm New England welcome. The calls between us enabled me to assist him in finding the hostel by meeting him at a mutually agreed upon place in downtown Newport, at which time he followed me in his car to the hostel. He later told me he was very grateful I went out of my way to help him find the hostel in the dark. (Unfortunately I can't give such personal service during the busy times of the year) Regarding his low rating of "fun"….This was not surprising given the fact he arrived after dark and left early the following morning. We both agreed that a few hours was too short of time for him to enjoy our beautiful City-by-the-Sea.
