Stayed at this place one night. Staff was helpful in every way and location was superb adjacent to both Nikko's train station. The place was a bit cramped, it was cold Indoors though and you were not allowed to sit around in the lounge after 11 PM, not even silently with your laptop or a book which annoyed me a bit since I'm a bit of a night owl.

Very nice stay. Hostel owners were very friendly and even drove us to an outdoor onsen. Location is very convenient and close to the station. Very well kept facilities. I do not believe there was a way to lock the door to the downstairs room Though this was not a big concern to me. I can see how it may bother some people though. No real complaints loved my stay here.

Although they officially don't accept small children (very sad), we arrived with our three year old, and they were very friendly and took us in. Staff is wonderful and atmosphere is friendly and family like. We loved our stay here, the house is old and traditional style, private room was wonderful. We loved our stay here, the only drawback is the children policy, and the distance to city attractions (2km walk, or bus ride). Still 5*

Lovely little guesthouse. Small, friendly and clean with good facilities. What really makes it though is Sato and Kumiko they ebullient hosts. They are incredibly friendly and try to create a real family atmosphere in the hostel. They also go out of their way to be helpful. I was travelling by bike and needed to get my bike repiared - within minutes of arriving Sato had whisked me off to a local bikeshop and helped me get everything sorted. And the next night they happily ferried me to an onsen.

Nice hostel in a very central location. When we stayed there we were two of only three guests and they offered us a better room. Staff are lovely offered to drive us to an onsen and pick us up. good for a single stay

We had a great time there and were made to feel very welcome. The Saturday night dinner where we had ago at filleting some poor fish which we think was a sardine was very enjoyable.

I wouldn't call this a hostel..staying at this place felt like visiting an old friend! As other reviews have alluded, the best thing about Guesthouse Sumica are the owners, Sato-san and Kumiko-san! Not forgetting their helper Kari-san. Helpful, friendly, and very knowledgeable about the area, they'll make you feel right at home from the get go. For any Malaysians out there, you'll be impressed by Sato-san's knowledge of the malay language and love of our food! Highly recommended!!

Amazing hostel, one of the best I've stayed in. Feels more like home than a hostel.

This was the best hostel of my month long Japanese excursion! The owners Sato and Kumiko make the experience, but the hostel itself is full of character, clean facilities, and laughter. Even when I was the only guest, I was completely entertained just by hanging out with the staff. You could not stay at a better hostel in Nikko.

A gem. This guesthouse is a gem in the middle of Nikkō mountains. The managing couple is awesome. Besides providing the guesthouse facilities, they go beyond and offer a "short-term homestay programme". I'm glad and thankful to participate in the community ice picking process (in order to produce kakigōri) and to prepare together with other guests a wonderful sukiyaki. Kumiko and Sato are amazing. Also, Kumiko suggested the best restaurants ever in a very economic rate. Both were wonderful.

We highly recommend this guesthouse! The owners are the sweetest and most hospitable people we met on our trip. They offer heaps of suggestions for things to do in and near Nikko, can drive you to close by bath houses after dinner, and always happy to sit down and have tea or dinner together. We were lucky enough to be here around Christmas time and they invited us to join them and their friends for a christmas celebration. One of the best places we've stayed at!

Super kind staff and neighbour ;-) Located next to the stations but therefore a little to walk to the sightseeing spots. Recommended!
