Nikko Park Lodge is great. Although it seems odd for most foreigners, Nikko, and rural Japan in general are so safe the hostel often keeps all doors open and you can just walk in and out as you like (the dorm, that is). There is a small local public bath just around the corner from the hostel which is very convenient. The Mountainside hostel is a bit outside the centre, so I recommend a taxi after nightfall - or, in my case, a local restaurant owner drove me home after my meal :).

The lodge is beautiful and cozy, bunkbeds comfortable and private. Be aware that while it is situated in a scenic and safe spot the walk back from the centre is VERY dark as the streets are not well lit. Would reccomend a flashlight.
the dinner zen set was amazing. the dorm style room was quite open. the wifi was a little spotty and they had many networks and passwords. simplification would be better in this regard. the showers were a little muggy. but the bookshelf in the lobby has some great books, try one
The hostel was adequate, the dorms had lockers for your valuables but not much space for backpacks or suitcases. No lock for the dorm room but the location is pretty safe. Wi-fi connectivity was hit or miss. Location was about 20min-25min with luggage uphill walk from the station and town, though it is a very scenic walk. Staff could be difficult to find if there was no one checking in. Sociable atmosphere as there is a large common area and most order breakfast at the lodge.
The staff was very helpful and provided a shuttle pick up down by the train station at their other hostel for free. We stored our luggage there visited the sites had a lovely smoothie and shaved ice at their cafe and free shuttle. Better than walking up hill 20 minutes. The had a cook at the hostel who made a reasonably priced meal that was delicious. Thank you!
I really loved this place! Nikko Park Lodge is about a 15 min walk from the train stations (not so bad). If you're lucky and run into him, the hostel owner is very generous with giving a ride to or from the park lodge, but it's not guaranteed, so don't expect that to happen. The shared bathroom and shower are really nice. If you want to do laundry, it's a little expensive I think (1000-yen for washer and dryer), & workers are always walking through, but I still highly recommend this place.
