- Thought it was a more of an "american type'' hotel, but it is more of a "ryocan" (tatamis, futon, shared baths) - Nobody at the front desk everything we came in and out from the building. Front door unlocked and room doors without external lock. Did not feel very safe. Staff very nice when present. - Located 20 minutes walk from the second to last train station from Nikko, so plan a good hour of travel in order to reach Nikko.

I stayed for one night in a twin room at Nikko Suginamiki Youth Hostel. I had planned a longer stay, but I soon cancelled it and went to Nagano instead. The Suginamiki staff are friendly and will drive you around. This is just as well, because it is a twenty minute walk from the nearest station. The main problems are the dirty rooms and musty old sinks and bathing facilities. Perhaps some money should be spent renovating. I did not feel like I was spending money wisely once I had arrived.
