Free food is great, even with no free wifi it is the best located and has the best value of the hostels in auckland

The fridge in our apartment was never cleaned, even when I requested it to be cleaned after milk was spilled all over one shelf. If you was in the room when the cleaner come round they wouldn't clean it. For 6 dorm rooms there was one mug. Only one of the rings on the stove worked. The meal upgrades were the best thing about the hostel. The reception staff were very nice though.

The hostel is divided in apartments. In my apartment were 4 dorms and a common area (kitchen, bathroom, living room, no window). The dorm itself was very basic without window. In my opinion, the main problem was that I could hear from the dorm everything that people said in the living room or in the other dorms, even if they were discreet. The cleanliness was correct. The location is excellent, right in the center, close to restaurants and transports, and free food is served every day at 7pm.

Hey Laetitia, We love the uniqueness of the apartments here at The Fat Camel but sometimes it can get a little too cosy. The apartments are meant to make you feel at home and we guess people can take that too literal. We just hope they don't over share too much :o) Great to hear everything else was all good though. Hope you get the chance to come back and visit. Enjoy the rest of your travels. The Fatty Crew!

I liked the apartment style of the hostel. Really good value for Money; little dinner included. Thumbs up!

Great hostel but not very well maintained. Window broken in the room (for 10 months we heard) and it was very cold. Showers also not very well kept!

Hey Emerson, The Fat Camel is indeed a very old building and therefore definitely has some maintenance issues which are consistently trying to improve on....the showers and windows in particular, but it can be a very hard and long process. We do appreciate your feedback. Thanks The Fatty Crew!

Only one socket with 2 entry points in a room for 4 which makes it very inconvenient cause once someone plugs in a converter (which is usually big) it'll block the other point. So practically only one person can be charging something at one point of time.

Hey Denise, It is very unfortunate that some of our rooms don't have enough sockets for everyone in the room to use at one time but it is currently on our wishlist of things to have changed and your feedback helps us show try and do this. Thanks The Fatty Crew!

Great location and staff on front desk but the bathrooms were not clean at all.

All good things about the hostel, just had an extremely rude roommate who decided that snoozing his alarm 12 times was okay. Hostel has a great locations and the free dinner was great, no free wifi though

Definitely could be cleaner! No lockers. Lots of people living here long term rather than just backpackers. Really good location.

The beds were incredibly rickety, and this was highlighted excessively by the guy on the top bunk who wouldn't stop masterbating ALL night. And the window wouldn't close. The location was convenient and price was competitive.

All together not a bad hostel, good location, nice staff, reasonable price. Also the concept of apartments with shared kitchen/bath is nice. However, the room I stayed in (cheapest cat., 4 beds) had neither window nor air condition. Only a small fan on the ground got us some air in this room. I understand the problem, given the location in the middle of the house. An A/C would improve the place greatly though. Apart from that, not too clean, but that's because of lazy travelers not the staff

My room had no window, it should be clarified the common area had no ventilation, and people cooking there kind of a hazard. The hostel being next to a "gentleman club", gives it a really bad touch

Stayed here for two nights on two separate occasions. Room was very hot with no fan and when we arrived at 8pm the rooms were not made up from the people the night before. The second time we stayed the key system was broken so we had to leave the door open all night. Nonetheless, it was cheap and cheerful and I would stay here again as the location is good.

Did not enjoy the stay at all. The staff did nothing at all to make guests feel welcome. The room was filthy. No powerpoints worked. Shower was always wet because the door was broken. The lockable cupboards were all broken. The fridge was a mess and due to not having any shelves, food was left to accumulate on the bottom together. I would have given this hostel less but I assume it got some points for its location, which was pretty good. Going back to Auckland soon but never will I go here again

We stayed in the budget room - so you definitely get what you pay for, with no windows or air ventilation. Thankfully there was a fan in the room to circulate air at night. We were quite concerned our room was left wide open two nights in a row, despite being the only ones in there. The staff weren't able to give us a reasonable explanation. Thankfully nothing was stolen, but definitely concerning as it happened twice. For $20/night it was what we were after, but we likely wouldn't stay again.

Good Points - Most staff were very helpful and kind. Location is a 2 minute walk to Queen street which is perfect. Atmosphere is pretty standard for a hostel. Bad Points - Lockers in my room had been smashed, so the door key falling off the hinges, forcing me to carry my laptop and camera everywhere. Whole building feels completely out dated and smells pretty rancid in parts. Single fridge to share between a whole floor of people. Smells of rotten food too Not worth $25 per night

Possibly the worst sleep I have ever had in a hostel. The noise from the bar downstairs is ridiculous. Everyone congregates, drinking in common areas outside the rooms before and after visiting the bar meaning more noise. There were no lockers and the room, kitchen and bathrooms were dirty. Positives: free dinner.

Great hostel. Really friendly staff. Located just down the street from an airport shuttle bus stop! We enjoyed our stay and would return.
