I like the apartment layout, the location was close to Vector, and the bed was comfortable. BUT: 1. I had booked a twin room and when I got there it was a double. When I went back to ask for a twin, the guy blamed it on Hostelworld (although my email confirmation said twin) and initially said he didn't have any twin rooms spare. He did find one for me eventually though. 2. The window in our room wouldn't close, and it was INCREDIBLY loud all night - music blaring and construction. On a Monday!

Only good point was the location, very central- you definitely get what you pay for- bearable for a night stays- wouldn't have wanted to have stayed any longer. Was pretty disappointed, not very clean, very noisy- road works directly outside. Hostel reception staff were ok- bar staff could have been friendlier- female bar worker very rude. Lessons on how to talk to customers would be of benefit!!!

Good Morning Andrew, Thank you for taking the time to review Nomads Fat Camel. We apologise immensley if you thought our bathrooms were not quite up to standard, we do have a cleaning crew from 10am to 2pm daily but sometimes between those hours our backpackers can be a bit messy and not clean up after themselves. Some of our dorm rooms are sameller than others, we would have been more than happy to move you as I am petrified of small spaces. I am so happy you liked our staff, we hope to see you again soon. Kind Regrads, The Fatty Crew

We stayed in a very small room without any window and without air. The bed was damaged so we couldnt barely move at night. Woulndt stand to be there more than two nights.

It was rubbish. The communal area was huge and it only had a couple of couches. The internet signal was shocking. You had a little common area on your floor but it was too small to really do anything in and the staff were just rude. I wouldn't recommend the place if you're traveling on your own. Plus every morning you can hear rubbish vans emptying the bins and I know that isn't the hostels fault but I would of liked to know that before I arrived there.

Good Morning James, Thank you for taking the time to rate Nomads Fat Camel. I am so sorry to hear your stay with us was not much of a pleasant one. We have however made changes to our common room area and are in the mix of making huge improvements to our hostel. In regards to our staff, I apologise immensley if you thought someone was ever rude to you. We strive to be both professional and fun at all times and we will be looking into this further. Depending on the day of the week, some of our rooms with windows can cop a bit of noise from the Rubbish Sweepers outside, we apologise if your sleep was interrupted. If you ever come back to Auckland, please do come back and visit us, we apologise again for any inconvenience caused. Kind Regards, The Fatty Crew

Code on the security cards sometimes changed, so you had to go down to reception to get the card reset. When I checked in, had troubles with the key card. You had to go through one security door to get to the kitchen area, then another door to get to the dorm. The card wouldn't let me into the kitchen area. Wasn't really impressed how had to take my luggage back down to get it sorted. The dorm rooms were tiny. The locker I had couldn't be locked. The floor I was on, 1 shower was out of action

Good Morning Lindsay, Thank you for taking the time to rate Nomads Fat Camel. I do remember when this was, I apoloze for the inconvenience caused as we were having technical issues with our machine that cuts our keys. Some of our dorms are smaller than other's, we would have happily moved you as I am terrified of small spaces and would have rather you'd been comfortable. In regards to one of the shower's being out of action, please do take note that this taken care of as soon as reception was made aware of the fault. We do hope you enjoyed your stay with us here, if you do come back to Auckland please do come back and say hello. We hope to see you again. Kind Regards, The Fat Camel Crew

A screw up meant myself and my companion had to settle for being in different rooms despite booking together. Also, there seemed to be very poor system with the luggage room key. Due to the fact that someone else always seemed to have the key and have taken it with them to whatever place in the hostel they pleased, we were unable to access our luggage for most of the day. Not only that but it seemed anyone could ask for the key without checks to confirm they were staying in the hostel

Good Morning Martin, Thank you for taking the time to review Nomads Fat Camel. Yes, it can be a bit noisy around here at the moment with all the roads works going on. Fort Street is going to look amazing at the end of September this year though. We apologize for any inconvenience caused. We hope the rest of your travels are going well. My only criticism was that a group stayed up until after 4.00am( with their radio playing until then) right outside the room where I was intermittantly sleeping as the radio kept waking me up. Come on guys. Ive stayed in alot of hostels world wide, and I think midnight is late enough. I was on the fourth floor

Friendly helpful staff. Especially when our booking was wrong and we were put into two separate rooms (with other people!) Managed to get that sorted. Like the apartment-style set-up. My card wouldn't get me into my floor though, lucky someone was at the door to the stairwell to let me in! Pretty good for budget accommodation in the CBD - you won't get anywhere much cheaper than this & on short notice (about a month out I booked it)!

Good Morning Michelle, Thank you for taking the time to review Nomads Fat Camel. We are so happy to hear you enjoyed your stay here with us, thank goodness we were able to get the little mishap sorted with your rooms. I apologize in regards to your key card not working, as we have a 24 hour operated reception we would have been able to re-set your card if there was no one in the stairwell to let you in :) We love our apartment style accommodation also and yes the location is pretty handy. If you ever come back to Auckland again, please come back and visit us. We hope the rest of your travels are going well. Cheers- Nomads Fat Camel Crew

We had a great stay here! We were under the impression, though, that lockers were provided, but when we got there they turned out to be boxes that required you to bring your own lock. We had something stolen on the first night, but after that the staff offered to let us use the reception safe. We must have just had bad luck, as no one we talked to had ever had anything stolen there. It's definitely a very cool hostel, I recommend the mixed dorms- great way to meet people. Also- great staff!

Hello there Giordyn, Thank you for taking the time to review Nomads Fat Camel. I am so glad to hear you enjoyed your stay here. I apologize you got the wrong end of the stick in regards to 'lockers', alot of our guests seem to travel with their own padlock as this is quite common in hostels all around the world. If some how you got this misleading information from us, I do apologize. By any chance did you come down and report your stolen goods??? They may have turned up or our cleaning staff may have put it in our lost and found items. We think our hostel is very cool too, thanks so much for all the positive feedback. If you ever come back to Auckland, please come back and see us again. Kind Regards, Nomads Fat Camel Crew

Me and my friend were staying for 2 nights at this hostel, and they messed up our rooms and so we had to change rooms the second night, and our first room was very dirty and had spiders. All the bed covers and towels smelled unclean. Our second room was better but had no power plugs. The service was average, and some of the people working there seemed incompetent. Good location in the centre city, but that was about the only thing recommending it.

Good Morning Jennifer, Thank you for taking the time to review Nomads Fat Camel. I apologize that you and your friend had to change rooms, as we have an online booking service this means that anyone at anytime can book into a room. What had happened in your case was that we were pretty much full due to several events happening in Auckland City at that time so we were unable to keep you both in the same room for consecutive nights, all we could do to keep you together was to unfortunately change rooms for the second night. We apologize for the inconvenience. I also apologize for the smell, I am not too sure what that could have been but I will look into this further though. Please know that ALL of our rooms have Power points in them, some are not in obvious places though and can be located underneath the window sills... strange place I know. Spiders??? Yikes, this is a first. As we were a full hostel at the time, sometimes business can come off as looking incompetent. I am also sorry that you received 'Average' service, we will also keep an eye on this. Despite the above, we hope you enjoyed your time here in Auckland, good luck with the rest of your travels. Cheers - Nomads Fat Camel Crew

A lot of people who stay at this hostel are long-timers, meaning they've been staying at the hostel for a while, and they've gotten to know each other pretty well. If you aren't exactly a social person, it might be difficult to enter the circle.

Owner Comment (Show)
Good Morning Kevin, Thank you for taking the time to review Nomads Fat Camel. We do have a few long termers here staying with us, in the past we have found them to be the most inviting of our guests as they are aware of the uncomfortableness of the 'Breaking the Ice' procedure. I apologize if this was not the case for you, we hope you enjoyed your stay with us here anyway. Cheers - Nomads Fat Camel Crew

i dont like the dry policy. i understand that more backpackers are doing it but i didnt want to have to drink in the bar. i felt like a few quiet ones and chilling out but i couldnt. it will stop me staying there are any backpackers that do it (well unless they all end up doing it then i have no choice). plus the t.v was not working which sucked but not so worried about that. but all in all a good stay.

Kia Ora Joe, Thank you for taking the time to rate Nomads Fat Camel. I understand where you are coming from in regards to our "Dry Policy" (No alcohol in the apartments). Unfortunately, because we have a bar on the premises this is the law and we have to abide by it otherwise we can be shut down. Nomads Fat Camel just wouldn't be the same without our bar. Yes, our television was out of action for a wee while, this has now been fixed. I am glad you had a good stay, please come back and visit again if you ever come back to Auckland. Safe and Happy travels Cheers - Fatty Crew
