It's too bad there isn't a spot to hang out at the hostel. They wanted everyone to go hang out together at the beach. Little bit of a walk from town but overall a good place.

The receptionist was nice and accommodating for such a large group! Thank you for putting us all together and for making our stay a pleasant one. Great location, body boards, kitchen, facilities, DVDs -- felt just like a condo beach vacation. Wifi pretty spotty in rooms, however.

Nice little backpacker. Small rooms, with kitchen, toilet and shower in each unit. Outdoor access from each room, as well. Just across from the water, which is lovely.

Pros - It is very close to the beach, and the beach is nice and clean -they have houses with two bedrooms for 4 people each. The house comes with a kitchen and living area -they have free kayak rental Cons -The bedrooms in the house I stayed were too small to accommodate 4 strangers. -The kitchen area had no useful utensils, not even a good sp0on or fork, very unorganized. -Due to separate houses, it is difficult to meet other people who are traveling. -Internet sucks -Staff unfreindly

Amazing location on the beach, but a bit further from shops, amenities etc. Clean rooms and lovely small kitchen area shared between just 12 people if you stay in a 4 bed dorm, which was very homely. Furnishings and facilities definitely a little more basic, but clean. Only downside is that staff insist you must leave the property as soon as it's 10am on check out day, which is unusual for a hostel and won't be ideal if you have to hang around for a bus!

Couldn't really fault the place. Really lovely ladies behind reception. Kayak hire, dvd hire, lots of parking. Very clean and spacious. Great kitchens. One of our top hostels to date!

I like the units they consist of a tv room and kitchen as well as two dorms, very good for socializing.

We felt very welcome at 'on the beach backpackers'. The accomodation was spacious and homely and had everything we needed. We felt very comfortable. Staff was delightful

Good little hostel, but without a car hard to get around the area. Keep in mind Hot Water Beach and Cathedral Cove are NOT walking distance. Staff was really helpful. A bit of a walk into town.

We came in late but receptionist left a very cute and informative note to guide us in our room...

Free gas bbqs for everyone to use is nice. Stunning views over the water. Staff don't want to learn your names, they just call you young man or young lady. Lots of people hitchhiking there. No recommendations to go out in the evening

If 9 pm is considered as late, then it'd be helpful for the hostel to state clearly on the hostel's page to let travellers know. Not everyone can make it before 9 because of all conditions on the road and other reasons. It's possible to find food on Albert Street after 9 pm on a Saturday night in Whitianga. Arriving the hostel after a long drive then being told repeatedly we're late plus there was no food in town is NOT the way to show hospitality. We're your customers, not school students.

Fantastic stay at this hostel. Booked a 4 bed dorm for 3 of us and actually were lucky to get a 3 bed dorm to ourselves. Plenty of space and good facilities to use. Gorgeous balcony and view. Very happy with our stay and would definitely go back and recommend. Fantastic value for money. Thank you.
