We did not feel especially safe in the neighborhood, upon arrival it was very dirty & smelly, the bathrooms were gross & beds creaked (making sleeping on a top bunk alarming!) we booked other accommodations after one night here. Not recommended!
I was staying in the hostel for new year's. While the staff was very friendly most of them didn't speak English nor Spanish. Due to the hostel being 100% booked, there was a problem with a locker in the dorm (I took the last one and it was almost broken) and organization (I had to change a bed after one night because of some staff errors).
Had a really nice stay at Oztel. Good, safe location with lots of restaurants and useful things like laundry in walking distance. We stayed in the Amor de Madre double room and loved it! The room has a little patio where you can gaze at Cristo Redentor while sunbathing. Lovely air conditioning in the room, good wifi and not too far from the beaches or the sights.
Not impressed. Staff at reception aside of two guys that left were unprofessional and very pushy for payment when extending days etc hence no trust. The AC in the dorm made me violently ill and I switched hostels. There is one control at reception which doesn't help for temperature cntrol
Hostel Oztel is about a 20 minute walk to Copacabana beach and the main part of Botafogo. Our room was not really clean and had mould in the bathroom and the shower was freezing cold the whole time we were there. The staff were friendly overall and the location was central to most attractions, but we would probably not stay there again.
