From my point of veiw, the place grows on you. The place is an "Original" Japanese shop, the building is as it was 50 years ago including down two stairs and out the back for a shower but it has lashings of hot water. The staff are great in the true sense, typically Japanese, more helpful than anyone. The male dorm is robust and the female dorm is more sedate. At street level is a "Club Lounge" bar. About 1.5 kms from the station but I wish they had better directions on their site.

Very cool hostel! The staff were incredibly friendly and got to hang out with many of them at the awesome bar downstairs where their was a party. It was nice to meet Japanese locals rather than other travellers and they dispensed many good advice that guide books don't tell you. The rooms were nice and comfortable. The men's dorm was a converted attic of sorts...you will feel very much at home if you like artist communes and creative atmospheres. This hostel was one of the hilights of Kyoto.

I can't find it easily due to the picture of website not the same as the true hostel, but It 's OK for staff and good view.
