In the southernmost part of mainland Japan lies the Kii Peninsula, jutting out to the south into the Pacific Ocean.
Since ancient times, the Kii Mountain Range has nurtured the spirit of nature worship, in which mountains, rocks, forests, trees, rivers, and waterfalls are deified and revered as objects of worship.
Located to the south of the Nara Basin, site of one of Japan's ancient capitals, this region came to be revered by people in the capital as well, recognized as a sacred place where gods descend and reside.
