Good hostel, nice and clean facilities but would be better with separate bathrooms for male and female, and there is free wifi at Paihias small library, very nice.

The owner of the Peppertree was a friendly entertaining character and the facilities were awesome - great to have free use of DVDs on the rainy days, and free use of kyaks and bikes! also easy walking distance to all activies in Paihia:)

Owner very friendly. Bikes and kayaks for hire. Laundry only available in afternoons, but you could go to Base over the road. Washing line. Big, well laid-out kitchen. Paihia is a beautiful town -well worth getting the ferry over to Russel too.

Great hostel about 30 second walk from the beach. Communal areas clean and plenty of showers/space, with big kitchen and huge tv and dvd library in living room, and outside area for bbqs. No social activities organised by the hostel while we were there but then bars and beach were right around the corner so wasn't a problem. Would not recommend, however, if you're over 5ft 7 - beams and ceilings in bedrooms very low and almost impossible to sit up on the top bunk if you're taller than that!

Owner Comment (Show)
The whole town was noisy that day and followed through until just after mid night. The annual music festival and a long weekend floods the town with thousands of people. And unfortunately we have no control on those who are not staying here. Tour groups also start moving around earlier than most other folk

Very friendly and homely place to stay. All staff were helpful, and the no noise after 11pm rule was much appreciated!

No toilet paper in the ensuite bathroom. Judging from the looks of the place, I wasn't sure toilet paper would be included in the ensuite so I didn't complain. The common areas are great, well looked after. Comfortable mattress in the bunks, lots of space but did feel like you got what you paid for, and at $20 I'm not complaining. Bathroom was the only thing sort of outdated but there were larger shared bathrooms in other areas to use with TP. The son of the couple who runs the place was great!

The bathrooms are serviced daily, with one roll of toilet paper on the holder and another in the bathroom, if more is required, or was required then i am not sure why you did not ask as i buy it by the hundreds of rolls and have enough on hand for at least a month. Suggest you ask rather than leave and then advise us when its too late to address.

not entirely sure the door locks were the safest type from a security point of view... but the facilities were excellent and well maintained... the rooms tidy and exactly what we were after... the location couldn't have been beaten. was quiet - but it's the off season and some people are after quiet at that time of year.

Shane, the locks have never been a problem, and the insurance company is more than happy with them. We have never had a forced lock at Peppertree in over 20 years, so i asume old but sturdy. We are not a party hostel, so most of the year it is quiet here after 10pm. bryan
