I absolutely loved staying at Phil's Haven. The atmosphere was warm and friendly. The owner's are the most kind people, always ready to help with tips and advices. The place is spaceous, with dreamy views of the Atlantic, out of the busy centre, but still close enough to take a lasurely walk... For those of you who are not ready to walk uphill with a suitcase under your arm, I recommend you to catch the citybus no.40 (Quinta da Rocha) in the centre, which stops about 20m away from the hostel.

The staff is the best. The services, help and advice they provide are super. Its far from the center of Funchal. At least 20-30 minutes walking, and the last bus to the hostel departs at 21.30 from city center... If you have a car its ok. The mattress of the double room its irregular and could disturb your sleep.

Phil and his staff create a very pleasant atmosphere; the hostel is on a nice location, a bit out of town by foot, but with reasonable busconnection. Good bathrooms, computers for general use and a lot of outside space.

Very nice hostel and still better staff. Phil helped me with finding the best hiking trail and find the best bus connection for me. The hostel is not located centrally, but it really is not very far. It is easy to walk to the city centre on foot. Everything u need, very uncomplicated and a nice atmosphere!

Phil's Haven is a great place to stay! It is a little out of the way from Funchal but can be easily reached by walking, and there is also a bus that stops right nearby. The bus is #40. If you walk from the hostel you arrive right in old town which is awesome! Phil and Edgar are great guys and the volunteers were super nice as well! All around a great place to be!
